John McKinney, 82

April 6, 2012

John R. McKinney, 82, a resident of rural Eel River Township in Allen County, died at 8:56 a.m. on Tuesday, April 3, 2012, at the Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne.
He was born on Feb. 25, 1930, in Lebanon, a son of Vern and Katherine (Hunt) McKinney.
He served with the U.S. Army.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Margaret A. McKinney; a son John R. McKinney, Jr. of Norwood, Mo.; a daughter, Janice R. Ogg of Eel River Township; his brother, David Joe McKinney of Thorntown; and three grandchildren.
His parents preceded him in death.

Ilene Richardson, 84

E. Ilene Richardson, 84, of Columbia City, passed away at 2:40 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2012, at Covington Meadows, Fort Wayne.
Born Nov. 15, 1927, in Fort Wayne, she was the daughter of Paul H. and Irene (Ferrell) Shroyer.
In 1937 she moved from Allen County to her present home in Whitley County.
She attended Jefferson Township Elementary School and graduated with the class of 1945 from Jefferson Township High School.
On Nov. 10, 1951, she married William D. Richardson in Columbia City.

Floyd Mettler, 91

Floyd Mettler, 91, of Longwood, Fla., passed away at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, March 18, 2012, at Longwood Health Care Center, Longwood, Fla.
Born June 26, 1920, in Whitley County, he was the son of Floyd E. and Edna P. (Leer) Mettler.
He attended the Columbia City public school system. On Aug. 22, 1937, he married Dorothy E. Corning in Columbia City.
A resident of Allen and Whitley County areas most of his lifetime, he moved to New Carlisle, Ohio in 2000.

Marvin Reynolds, 77

COLUMBIA CITY — Marvin Lee Reynolds, 77, of Columbia City, died at 12:25 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2012, at Parkview Oaks where he was admitted on Friday.
He was born Feb. 28, 1935, in Greenville, Ohio, a son of Miles E. and Marjorie D. (Hodge) Reynolds.
As a young boy, his family moved to Fort Wayne and then in 1937 to Wolf Lake. He graduated from Wolf Lake High School.
On July 11, 1957, he was inducted into the U.S. Army. A military policeman, he was honorably discharged June 30, 1963.

Dorothy Wheeler, 90

Dorothy P. Wheeler, 90, of South Whitley, passed away at 9 p.m. Sunday, April 1, 2012, at her home.
Born on March 5, 1922, in Leiters Ford, she was the daughter of Charles and Nellie (Fisher) Campbell.
She moved from LaPorte to South Whitley, and lived there for 40 years.
She worked at Dana Weatherhead, Columbia City as an assembler for 15 years. She was a member of New Hope Wesleyan Church, Columbia City.

Tri Lakes Easter Egg Hunt Saturday
An Easter Egg Hunt will be held at Tri Lakes Baptist Church Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 am. The event is for any child between the ages of three and the fifth grade. Activities will consist of game time, story time, puppets, Egg Roll and an Egg Hunt. Bags will be provided for each child. Also, there may be a special appearance by a very large chicken. The event is free of charge.

COLUMBIA CITY — Following nearly two years of discussion concerning a zoning ordinance regarding regulations for wind energy systems, the debate has finally ended. For now, anyway. The truth is the subject has merely shifted sails and is now making its way to the desks of the Whitley County Board of Commissioners, where there is little chance an approval or disapproval will be a quick process.

SUMMER SAFETY: Cops issue friendly reminders

COLUMBIA CITY — With warm weather moving into the area soon, the Columbia City Police Department is offering summertime safety tips for local residents.

The CCPD wants to remind citizens to lock their vehicles, homes and outbuildings, walk or run in well-lit areas at night and educate children about potential dangers. According to the CCPD, most vehicle break-ins and thefts are crimes of opportunity. If the vehicle is unlocked, it is easy to go through and take things.

EASTER EGG TIME: City egg hunt set for tonight

COLUMBIA CITY ­— The annual Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by the Columbia City Rotary Club will be held at Morsches Park baseball diamonds tonight at 6 p.m.

Age groups for children include: Up to 2 years old with parent assisting; 3 to 5 years old with parent accompanying, 6 to 8 years old, no adult help, and 9 to 11 years old. Children over age 11 are not allowed to participate.

Columbia City seniors Brandon Gay and Matt Rethlake were named to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Academic All-State Honorable Mention team.

Also garnishing honors from the IBCA were juniors Drew Benedict and Derek Hinen, receiving All-State Underclassmen Honorable Mention honors.
