ROCHESTER — Whitko’s girls tennis team picked up its first win of the season Wednesday night at Rochester.
The Lady Wildcats won by a close 3-2 margin.
No. 3 singles player Laura Hippensteel is undefeated after three matches. Hippensteel defeated her Rochester opponent 6-4,6-3.
Abby Marshall won in a three-game match over Lady Zebra Makayla Stockberger in No. 1 singles. She won the first game 6-3, lost the second 6-3 and won the third 6-1.
In No. 2 singles, Aressa Tackwell also won in three games. Tackwell won the first 6-4, lost the second game 6-2 and won the third game 6-4.

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s baseball team scored seven runs in the second inning en route to an 8-2 win over Peru Wednesday evening in South Whitley.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a passed ball by the catcher. The Wildcats’ bats caught fire in the second.
Whitko’s Ryan Weigold and Austin Mort got on base first. Teammate Alex Stoddard grabbed two RBIs with a double, getting the Wildcats on the board and taking the lead.

PIERCETON — According to Whitko Community School Corporation’s Superintendent Steve Clason, summer evaluation plans are in the works.
The evaluations will focus on non-tested subjects including art, music, physical education and areas of social studies classes.
Greg Allen Howard, 43, of New Windsor, Ill., and formerly of South Whitley, recently passed away at his home.
Born July 31, 1968, in Wabash, he was the son of George A. and Janet L. (Brown) Howard.
He graduated from Whitko High School with the Class of 1986 and attended college in Defiance, Ohio and Indiana-Purdue University, Fort Wayne.
He lived in South Whitley for 21 years prior to moving to Illinois where he lived for the past 23 years.
He worked at P.P.C. Plastics, Moline, Ill. in the injection mold set-up department.

Growing up on the family farm south of Churubusco with beloved siblings (and outlaws) Ken (Janne) Buesching, Arcola, Bonnie (Al) Gore, Warsaw, Marlene Augenstein, Fort Wayne and Don (Colleen)Buesching, Noblesville, a passion for gardening emerged with the only lingering question being which sibling threw her precious bride doll to the pigs.
COLUMBIA CITY — Nancy J. Grissom, 61, of Richland Township died at 9:44 p.m. Monday, April 16, 2012, at Parkview Whitley Hospital emergency room.
She was born Jan. 2, 1951, in Johnstown, Pa., a daughter of Richard D. and Jean L. (Baltzer) Wolfe.
She graduated from Columbia City Joint High School and Indiana University with a bachelor’s degree in education.
On Sept. 7, 1974, she was united in marriage to Michael W. Grissom. They made their home in Albion until 1988, when they moved to their present home.
SOUTH WHITLEY — Jodi and Ethan Metzger had known they were having triplets since their eighth week of pregnancy, but what they did not know was that on Valentine’s Day they would receive three beautiful gifts from Heaven.
The Metzger triplets were not expected to be born Feb. 14, but Jodi drove herself to her doctor’s appointment earlier in the day, and within the hour, she was scheduled for a cesarean section to deliver.
“The doctor got things in motion, and he told me to call the babies’ daddy right away,” said Jodi.
COLUMBIA CITY — As expected, about the only discussion regarding the wind issue with the Whitley County Board of Commissioners Monday was that there would be no discussion regarding the wind issue; not yet, at least.
Whitley County joint Building and Planning Director Dave Sewell was on hand at Monday’s meeting to deliver and “certify” a copy of the proposed ordinance change for zoning, as it pertains to wind energy conversion systems.
Sewell explained that all of the proper and required steps to this point had been taken.

CHURUBUSCO — Columbia City’s baseball team continued its winning ways Monday night against county-rival Churubusco, defeating the Eagles 11-3.
Columbia City tallied 12 hits, including a home run by Connor Slavich, triples by Slavich and Derek Lamle and a double by Jordan Bickle.
Columbia City got a 2-0 lead in the first inning and built it to a 6-0 advantage by the top of the third. ’Busco got its first run in the fifth inning, but Columbia City retaliated with five more runs to make the score 11-1 going into the bottom of the fifth.
COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County is currently doing its part to go green. According to Whitley County Board of Commissioners Chairman Don Amber, about a year ago the county applied for and received an energy grant in the amount of $265,000.
The county used the grant at the Whitley County Jail, as well as switch to more energy efficient products for the jail’s entire heating system.
According to the grant administrator’s records, the project in the jail saved the county $8,520 in electricity and $18,340 in natural gas compared to the previous year.
