COLUMBIA CITY â As a little girl, Michaela Thomas, currently a senior at Columbia City High School, watched young women participate in the Distinguished Young Women (DYW) program, formerly known as Junior Miss.
âYou wouldnât think that something like that would help you discover who you are, but it did, it helped me,â said Thomas. âYou develop confidence, and it makes you realize some of your strengths.â
A recruitment session for prospective participants of the 2013 DYW program has been scheduled for Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
COLUMBIA CITY â After more discussion on the proposed Wind Energy Ordinance, the commissioners decided to wait until their next meeting to make any decisions.
The meeting began with Commissioner Thomas Rethlake asking, âHow are we going to proceed?â
Rethlake said he had recently received more comments that needed to be considered before making any proposed changes or decisions.
The commissioners decided not to consider any further written comments or suggestions after Mondayâs meeting.
COLUMBIA CITY ÂÂ Ââ The United Way of Whitley County recently named Cindy Baker as its executive director. On June 4, Baker will officially take the position, but her enthusiasm is already kicking in.
âI am excited about this opportunity and to get out in the community. I am looking forward to opening up doors for the United Way. One of the things I think I will focus on is educating the community on what the United Way does and what it can offer the community,â said Baker.

COLUMBIA CITY â Three Columbia City linksters played their last match as Eagles at Eagle Glen Tuesday night against Wawasee.
Columbia City, led by senior Dustin Parrett, won by four strokes over the Warriors in the back nine, 175-179.
Parrett shot a season-low 40. Fellow seniors Drew Burnsworth and Tucker Daniel also wrapped up the home season with competitive scores.
âIt was a good way for Parrett to go out,â Columbia City Head Coach Andrew Thompson said.

OSSIAN â Whitkoâs softball teamâs season came to an end Tuesday night in what Head Coach Jamilyn Pegan called, a âheart-breaker.â
âIt was a heart-breaker but they went down strong,â Pegan said. âIâm proud of them. âWe were one run away, one hit away, one play away.â
The Lady Wildcats fell in the fifth frame, 2-1.
After a tough start from the plate, the Lady Wildcats got on the scoreboard for the first time in the sixth inning.
âThey hung in there,â Pegan said. âEspecially when they were struggling with hitting in the beginning.â

FORT WAYNE â Three Whitley County athletes are advancing to the Indiana State Track Finals in four events after strong placings in Northropâs regional competition Tuesday night.
Columbia Cityâs Samantha Roush took second in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:04.58, the state-qualifying standard.
Heather Monk from Churubusco is advancing in two events â the shot put and discus.
Monk threw the qualifying standard in both events. She placed second in the shot put with a heave of 41 feet, 9 inches. In the discus, Monk took third with a throw of 128 feet, 11 inches.

Brian J. Bloom, 62, a resident of Des Plaines Illinois, died on May 7, 2012, at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge Il., following a brief illness.
COLUMBIA CITY âKenia, The Oaksâ beloved chocolate labrador, was remembered with fondness, love and great fun.
Kenia, who died Feb. 16, was a special therapy dog at the Columbia City nursing home. A special ceremony was conducted last Wednesday and her ashes spread around the base of the pink dogwood tree planted in her memory just outside the entrance of the well known health care facility.
Chad Smyth, executive director of The Oaks, welcomed more than 35 people attending. Many patients watched from the lounge area inside the home.
COLUMBIA CITY â Thanks to the continued generosity of local donors who have given to the Whitley County Community Foundation, 10 local organizations were recently awarded a total of $24,850 in grants. The Board of Directors approved the following funding recommendations made by the 10-member Grants Committee.
âą The Columbia City High School Fine Arts Department, $7,500 toward the cost of upgrading the current lighting system in the auditorium at CCHS.
âą B.A.B.E. of Whitley County Inc.,$3,000 for inventory items.
