CHURUBUSCO â The Churubusco Jr.-Sr. High School gymnasium was full of families and friends Friday night as 106 seniors walked across the stage and received their diplomas.
One unexpected turn of events happened after Valedictorian Brandi Herron and Salutatorian Rachel Fehring spoke. The two girls lifted their arms in a dance move and a flash mob broke out with nearly 75 percent of the graduates dancing in sync. The audience began laughing, clapping and cheering for the celebrant youth.
COLUMBIA CITY â Old Settlers Day parade is presented by The Old Settlers Day Association and the Columbia City American Legion Post 98. The parade theme this year is, âThe Heartland of America.â
The community is invited to participate in the Old Settlers Parade on June 30. The parade will start at 5 p.m. from Columbia City High School.
There is no entry fee for the parade. Entrants must complete, sign and date an entry form. Forms are available at www.americanlegionpost98.com.
N. MANCHESTER â Manchester College honored alumni leaders in science, industry and education.
Molecular biologist, rubber and plastics industry executive, national education leader, internationally lauded solar energy scientist, and two whose enthusiastic service to their alma mater spans decades were all the Manchester Collegeâs latest Alumni Honor Award recipients
Among those honorees was Charles Chaffee, class of 1964.
Kathleen M. Johnson, 79, of rural Merriam, died Friday, June 8, 2012, of natural causes, while at her home.
She was born Nov. 30, 1932, in Peoria, Ill., a daughter of Ronald Ellsworth and Bess Frances (Stangland) Raber.
Her formative years were spent in Peoria. She graduated from Peoria High School, received her nursing degree from Methodist Hospital in Peoria and Bachelor of Nursing from Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore.
William K. Pequignot, 85, passed away Sunday, June 10, 2012, at Lutheran Hospital.
Surviving are his three children, eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and two sisters.
Dorothea E. Wilson, 87, of Jefferson Township, died at 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 8, 2012, at Renaissance Village where she had been a resident since Jan. 2011.
She was born Oct. 28, 1924, in Washington Township, a daughter of Harry H. and Gertrude I. (Robinette) Taylor.
Her formative years were spent in Jefferson Township. She graduated from Jefferson Center High School.
COLUMBIA CITY â As Columbia City High School (CCHS) seniors turned a page in their lives to begin a new chapter, they were reminded, by Valedictorian Jenee Schneider, how their time in high school has shaped who they are now and what they are to become.
âWhat we have become has been a combination of our experience here at Columbia City High School and the discovery of our talents,â said Schneider. âWe have all been blessed with different talents that will help us expand to our fullest potential in life.â
COLUMBIA CITY â BRC Rubber and Plastics, a company based in Churubusco which makes molded components for the automotive industry, is expanding, creating around 51 new jobs.
Thomas Maher, Human Resources at Churubuscoâs BRC Rubber and Plastics, said BRC will consolidate work in northeast Indiana, mainly in Blackford County.
âThe bulk of the jobs are going into two plants in Blackford County,â said Maher. âThose plants had the greatest room for expansion.â
The expansion will include Hartford City and Montpelier, with the bulk of the work, and Ligonier with some new jobs as well.
COLUMBIA CITY â Carol Heinold, food service director, gave the Whitley County Consolidated School (WCCS) Corporationâs Board of School Trustees information concerning food prices in the last several years at their work session last week.
âFederal requirements are that we are to try to raise our lunch prices, not breakfast, for the reimbursement rate,â said Heinold.
âLast year they told us we needed to raise it a nickel, and thatâs what theyâre showing this year.â
For kindergarten through fifth grade the proposed change is $1.60.
COLUMBIA CITY â At the county commissionerâs meeting last week, Commissioner Don Amber said he received an email from the town of Churubusco requesting $500 for downtown beautification.
Commissioner Tom Rethlake said the only thing he was concerned about is if some of this money would be designated for town painting and repairs.
âI just donât want to get to the part where we are buying paint to do windows or putty,â said Rethlake.
Amber said the money could be designated specifically for flowers, and Commissioner Scrumpf agreed with the idea.
