MEMORY LANE: Local woman visits car she once saw in Indy

COLUMBIA CITY — When local 80-year-old Barbara Craig picked up the paper one morning she saw a photo of a vintage Indy car she had not laid eyes on in years.
In the article with the photo, Barbara read that STAFCO, Steel Tank and Fabricating Corporation, was to host the refurbished Kennedy Tank Indy car for a day.
Venturing to reconnect with her past, Barbara visited STAFCO June 5 to see the car.
“It’s in perfect shape,” said Craig. “They even wanted me to get in it.”

ZONING REQUEST: City council approves change

COLUMBIA CITY — The Columbia City Common Council approved a request for an amendment to the Zoning Ordinance on second reading at its meeting Tuesday.
“As you remember, this is in regard to SDS Communications out on West Lincolnway, changing it from an Ag setting from a house to a business,” said Mayor Ryan Daniel to the council.
David Sewell, executive director of the Joint Planning and Building Department, was present, representing the Columbia City Plan Commission with the request.

Cavs’ Scott Kreiger changes sides

FORT WAYNE — With four state titles and 14 years under his belt as the Head Girls Basketball Coach at Canterbury, former Columbia City High School Hoopster Scott Kreiger announced yesterday that he would be the boys coach for the Cavs.

As the girls coach, Kreiger was 251-88. He won state titles in 2008, ‘09, ‘10 and ‘12. This season, he was the Indiana Girls All-Star team’s coach.

Eber wraps up renowned career

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Former Columbia City High School stand-out Leah Eber finished an illustrious career in track for Purdue as the Boilermakers’ top long jumper in the school’s history.

Eber’s name has filled both the indoor and outdoor seasons’ record books, including four Big Ten Titles in the long jump. She was recently named Second-team All-American by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association along with teammate Dani Bunch.
