COLUMBIA CITY â A woman was critically injured and two others were hurt Friday night in a crash in front of Dairy Queen in Columbia City.
According to police, a sports utility vehicle was stopped in the left northbound lane of Main Street in front of Dairy Queen when a motorcycle with two occupants hit the back of the SUV at approximately 9:42 p.m.
Blake Miller, 22, of Columbia City was the driver of the motorcycle and was transported by ambulance to Parkview Whitley Hospital. His passenger was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
SOUTH WHITLEY â Members of Whitko High Schoolâs class of 2012 were all smiles Friday night as tassels were turned, diplomas were received and classmates exchanged hugs during the studentsâ final official school function â the 2012 commencement ceremony.
âAlthough the moment may be temporary, these memories will last forever,â said class Vice President Jenifer Sparke, paraphrasing the class motto.
âWe plan on becoming very rich and powerful, so watch out.â
Whitko graduated 129 seniors during the hour-long ceremony.
James Lee âJimâ Stouder, 69, passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2012, at 9:39 p.m., surrounded by his family in their Warsaw, home.
Jim was born to Earl W. and V. Evelyn (Weybright) Stouder, July 13, 1942, in Nappanee, Ind.
He was a 1960 graduate of Nappanee High School. Moving from Nappanee, he lived in Kosciusko County since 1962.
Jim and Linda Dorsey were joined in marriage July 4, 1982, at the Harrison Center Church in Mentone.
Jim was a self employed contractor with Stouder Enterprises for 32 years, retiring in 2004.
CHURUBUSCO â The globally-recognized Destination Imagination team from Smith-Green Community Schools received a hearty pat on the back for its recent performance in Knoxville, Tenn.
The team, which received the Renaissance Award at the global competition last week, was lauded at Mondayâs meeting of the SGCS board of trustees.

The board approved three professional leaves. Sabrina Wormcastle will travel to Lafayette from June 11-15 to become a certified school bus driver trainer.
CHURUBUSCO â With interest rates at the lowest in recent history, Smith-Green Community Schools took expert advice and is now $6 million in debt with its eye on a new cafeteria, more classrooms, secured entrances at both schools and to be American Disabilities Act compliant.
Jim Elizondo, of City Securities Corporation, was on hand Monday at SGCS public work session and told the board they are looking at less than a three percent rate for bond issues.
âI have two options for you to consider,â said Elizondo.
COLUMBIA CITY â Dr. Patricia OâConnor shared news with the Whitley County Consolidated School (WCCS) Corporation Board concerning preliminary ISTEP results at its work session Monday.
âThis is only the preliminary data,â said OâConnor. âI wanted to share with you the trends thus far, and we are trending ever upward.â
OâConnor said third, fourth and fifth graders who took the ISTEP, tested well in English.
âOur third graders for the last few years have been soaring ahead,â said OâConnor. âThey are really doing a great job.â
COLUMBIA CITY â The TROY Alternative Center for Learning was a topic of discussion at the Whitley County Consolidated School (WCCS) board work session Monday.
The discussion revolved around TROYâs large increase in tuition.
Dr. Patricia OâConnor, superintendent of WCCS, said, âThey are raising their tuition rates, more than doubling the cost of tuition.â
Board members were curious as to why there was a 40 percent increase in tuition costs.
âWhy all of a sudden do we have a 40 percent increase in tuition?,â asked board member Tim Bloom.
A ribbon cutting was held last week to commemorate the grand opening of a new business in Columbia City.
Mayor Ryan Daniel, fourth from the right and owner Mark Jones, fourth from the left, cut the ribbon to officially open Discount Mattress Center, located at 535 N. Line St.

Churubusco senior Ryan Mayer was 2011-12âs last athlete to compete this season, as Whitley Countyâs only linkster to make it to regionals.
Mayer scored an 88 at Orchard Ridge Thursday morning.
He shot a 45 in the front nine and a 43 in the back nine.
Respondents to the most recent online poll at www.thepostandmail.com showed that 56 percent "always" attend Old Settlers Days in Columbia City, Turtle Days in Churubusco â or both of the popular Whitley County festivals. Both festivals occur later this month.
