Sharon (Chaffin) (Meitz) Freon, of Fort Wayne, passed away July, 21, 2012, at Parkview Regional Medical Center.
She graduated from North Side High School in 1957, and was employed as a nurse at Parkview Hospital for 19 œ years.
Upon her retirement she worked at Lutheran Social Services, Allen County Council on Aging and as a realtor with Better Homes and Gardens.
She was also a member at Trinity English Lutheran Church.
Robert Tucker, 71
Robert Lewis Tucker, 71, of rural Churubusco, died July 8, 2012, in Ft Wayne.
Growing up in the blue ridge mountains, young hillbilly Bob enjoyed fishing for rainbow trout, picking up arrowheads behind Harveyâs plow, singing in the church choir, playing the trombone, battling the occasional rattler and filling his lunch box with rocks to save himself from the school bully.
With parents, Paul and Helen Tucker and brother, Wayne, of Charlotte, N.C., the family moved around to follow his fatherâs job.
COLUMBIA CITY â Despite the way the economy has struggled and the way crops are looking, the 2012 Whitley County 4-H Livestock Auction still managed to raise $373,749 for 4-Hers.
The 2012 Whitley County 4-H Livestock Auction was held in the show barn again this year on Thursday.
Ritter Cox, auctioneer, welcomed more than 400 buyers during a rainy day.
COLUMBIA CITY âTwo bikes carrying medics could be seen tracking through the 4-H Whitley County Fair this year, as Parkview Whitley Hospital took extra steps to stay on top of medical emergencies.
The two bikes, owned by the hospital, were part of a Bike Medic program.
According to Andy Grote with Parkview, who came up with the idea last winter and saw it approved in March, this is the first year for the program.
âItâs a quicker aid for people in need,â said Grote. âThe bikes are fully stocked, and we carry just as much stuff on an ambulance.â
Gladys Kathryn Holycross, 97, formerly of Urbana, died at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, July 21, 2012, at Blair Ridge Senior Living Community in Peru. She was born Dec. 4, 1914, in Wabash County to Ernest and Emma (Lachmann) Hipskind.
Gladys was a 1933 graduate of Urbana High School. She married David LeRoy Holycross in Wabash on Oct. 1, 1938.
He preceeded her in death Oct. 4, 1963. She was a homemaker. Gladys was a member of the St. Peters United Church of Christ, where she was active in the Womenâs Guild. She loved flowers, gardening, playing Euchre, reading, watching golf and NASCAR racing.
E. Frances Nicodemus, 88, of rural Columbia City, died at 10:25 a.m. Saturday, July 21, 2012, at her home.
She was born Sept. 3, 1923, in Laud, a daughter of William and Ethel Mae (Bittner) Hollenbaugh. Her formative years were spent in Washington Township.
On Dec. 25, 1941, she was united in marriage to Keith V. Nicodemus. Shortly after marriage, they made their home in Columbia City and then Union Township.

COLUMBIA CITY â Peter Mallers, an attorney representing Parkview Health System Inc., attended the County Commissionerâs meeting Monday concerning the purchase agreement of the old hospital property in Columbia City.
âThis occasion is the second part of the presentation and the request made more than a year ago, February, 2011, related to the construction of the new hospital and the sale of the old hospital property,â said Mallers.
âThat was for the specific purpose of the sale of the Lemburg building, and today is for the specific sale of the hospital property, again to Passages Inc.â
COLUMBIA CITY â As the 4-H Whitley County Fair wrapped up Thursday, 4-H Fair President Cathy Heritier estimated this year brought in more profit than last year.
âThe final attendance numbers are not in yet, but regardless of whether our attendance was up, our profitability was up,â said Heritier.
âWe ended up finishing really well.â
Topping the list this year for the most popular desert was ice cream, with more than 12,000 gallons sold.
âWe also sold around 2,500 hotdogs, and we had to re-order pop and Gatorade,â said Heritier.
SHERMAN, Texas â A Columbia City man initially arrested in April for money laundering, but who pleaded guilty to another charge earlier this month should find out his fate in the next several months.
According to court records, Duane Ducharme, 70, pleaded guilty July 2 in U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Texas to misprision of a felony.
Ducharme was initially incarcerated in the Collin County Jail April 13 after being observed by agents of both the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Drug Enforcement Agency as part of what those agencies said was an ongoing investigation.
Betty R. Rhoades, 88, died Friday, July 20, 2012, at Zeeland Community Hospital in Zeeland, Mich. where she lived with her son, Terry.
She was born July 4, 1924, in Bluffton, a daughter of Charles Herbert and Nettie Lillian Rosen.
She attended Washington Center High School while she lived with âauntâ Mary as a ward of the court.
On Nov. 2, 1963, she married Donald E. Rhoades. They made their home in Arcola. Mr. Rhoades preceded her in death on May 31, 1984.
She retired from General Electric, Ft. Wayne, in 1972. She owned and operated Rhoades Grocery in Arcola from 1973 to 1975.
