COLUMBIA CITY — With bids recently being awarded by the Columbia City Park Board for the Blue River Trail extension project, construction is expected to start in no less than a few weeks.
“The project will extend the trail eight tenths of a mile while opening up the park to citizens on the north side of the city,” said Columbia City Park Director Mark Green.
Green said the extension will begin just south of the pond in Morshes Park, cross over the river and end near DeMoney Grimes Funeral Home.

CHURUBUSCO — While many teams are settling in to the 2012 season, learning what works for this year’s team — and what doesn’t — one thing hasn’t changed for Churubusco. When the Eagles take the field, they’re going to win.
In fact, out of the last 36 regular season games ’Busco has played, the Eagles have only lost three — just one on their home field.
Friday night’s contest against Prairie Heights was no different, as Churubusco’s offense racked up 42 points, and the defense held the Panthers scoreless.

Tug of war. That is the game school administrations are playing with the state. No area has been affected more than in the category of transportation. In recent years, fuel costs have skyrocketed and left schools with little-to-no way of covering the added expense.
Richard Lowell Smock, 80, of Bonita Springs, Fla. died Aug. 7, 2012.
He was a former resident of Columbia City. A memorial service to celebrate Richard’s life will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness, 500 N. Oak St., Columbia City on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
Sherry K. Sanders-Davenport, 64, passed away at 12:37 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012, at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne.
She was born on Jan. 27, 1948, in Wabash to Robert F. and Doris Louise (Wilcox) Thompson. She graduated from Nashville West End High School, Nashville, Tenn. with the class of 1966.
She spent most of her life in Fort Wayne and South Whitley areas. Sherry was employed at 3-M in equipment sales, then earned her Real Estate Broker and Appraiser Certification and was employed as a real estate broker.
Sherry was later self employed as an appraiser.

Cuts, reduction in force, layoffs — no matter how it is said, the results are the same. Schools are minimizing the number of staff on the payroll. Why? In 2010, after the state decided to cover staff salaries, the money stopped coming in.
COLUMBIA CITY — Today is the deadline for organizations to RSVP for a formal demonstration of the city’s new web-based load profiling service.
The service is intended to help businesses conserve energy costs with a program that allows them to analyze electric consumption through hard data.
“The Commercial Load Profiler enables businesses and industries to evaluate their energy usage and look for areas of improvement,” said AEI Sales Manager Erick Rheam, in a press release.
Marlene Joyce Green, 73, a resident of Churubusco, passed away at 3:15 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012, at Miller’s Merry Manor in Columbia City.
Ms. Green was born on Sept. 22, 1938, in Matoon, Ill., a daughter of Joe and Geneva Louise (Thompson) Fulk.
She was a member of the ladies auxiliaries of both the Churubusco Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Turtle Post 3846 and the Gilbert Davis American Legion Post 157 in Churubusco.

CHURUBUSCO — After a struggling start to the season, Churubusco’s tennis team improved its Northeast Corner Conference record to 2-2 this week, beating Central Noble Tuesday and Prairie Heights Thursday.
The Eagles downed the Panthers 4-1, with wins in all divisions, excluding No. 2 doubles.
No. 1 singles Luke Lillmars pummelled his Prairie Heights opponent, 6-0, 6-0. In No. 2 singles, Cody Luttman won a lopsided 6-2, 6-0 match.
Landon Lillmars won the forfeit in No. 3 singles, as Prairie Heights didn’t have enough players for a full team.

BUTLER – After a long week of matches for Churubusco’s volleyball team, the Lady Eagles defeated Eastside Thursday night for their third match in four days.
’Busco won in five games after the long trip to Butler. After winning the first game 25-15, the Lady Eagles lost the second in a close 25-22 competition. Churubusco retaliated with a 25-11 win in the third game, but lost the fourth 25-19.
The Lady Eagles won the fifth and final game by a close 15-12 margin.
Gabby Jones led ’Busco in aces with three. She also had 10 digs.
