METH: Two men arrested on meth charges

COLUMBIA CITY — Two men were arrested on methamphetamine charges Tuesday afternoon after a routine traffic stop.

According to Detective Gary Archbold, officer Jeff Chapman conducted a routine traffic stop at approximately 3 p.m., which resulted in the arrest of Jonathan Wells, 39, of Fort Wayne, and Aaron Shepherd, 19, of Columbia City.

“When Officer Chapman pulled over the vehicle, he saw a meth precursor in plain sight,” Archbold said. “He got permission to search the vehicle and found more precursors.”

COLUMBIA CITY — A methamphetamine tip turned into a bomb investigation Tuesday afternoon at Ace Hardware.

The Whitley County Drug Task Force was tipped off that Lori Sample, 46, of Albion, possessed ingredients used to make meth.

“The original tip was for meth precursors,” Columbia City Police Capt. Tony Hively said.

While investigating the vehicle, at approximately 3:53 p.m., police found items more dangerous than meth-making materials.

“There were bomb-making materials found inside the vehicle,” Hively said.

Gwendolyn Barsh, 89

August 1, 2012

Gwendolyn Mae Barsh, 89, a native of Columbia City, died Sunday, July 29, 2012, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota, Fla.
She was born Sept. 22, 1922, in Columbia City, a daughter of Eldon B. and Delta Maud (Egner) Barsh. She graduated from Columbia City High School, received her nursing degree from Wesley Hospital/Northwestern University and completed certification in bookkeeping.
She married Philip Warren Barsh. They made their home in Elmhurst, Ill. Mr. Barsh died Jan. 18, 1983. Gwendolyn moved to Venice, Fla. two years ago from South Whitley.

Kacy Meyer, 42

Kacy Lynn Trick Meyer, 42, of rural South Whitley, died July 28, 2012, at Memorial Hospital, in Savannah, Ga.
She was born Jan. 10, 1970 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. to Fred Trick Jr. and Kathy (Holmes) Trick.
Mrs. Meyer was a 1988 graduate of Manchester High School, and attended the University of Alabama.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Columbia City and the South Whitley Elementary School P.T.O.
She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and attending her children’s baseball and softball games. She especially loved her children, nieces, and nephews.

Anna Alles, 90

August 1, 2012

Anna Mae Alles, 90, of Columbia City, died at 8:21 a.m. Tuesday, July 31, 2012, at Renaissance Village where she had been a resident since March 11, 2011.
She was born Jan. 21, 1922 in Cincinnati, Ohio, a daughter of Carl H. and Martha M. (Wiemeyer) Maas. Most of her formative years were spent in Delphos, Ohio.
On June 6, 1942, she was united in marriage to Herbert J. Alles. They spent most of their married life together in Whitley County. Mr. Alles died Feb. 14, 1992.
A homemaker, her memberships include St. Catherine Nix Settlement Catholic Church and its Rosary Society.

Gladys White, 86

August 1, 2012

Gladys M. White, 86, of Columbia City, died at 2:45 a.m. Saturday, July 28, 2012, at Parkview Oaks, Columbia City.
Born Aug. 10, 1925, in Huntington, she was the daughter of Lewis W. and Louella (Hodson) Marks.
When she was eight years of age, her family moved from Huntington to Roanoke. She attended Roanoke High School.
On March 25, 1944, she married Leonard White in Tampa, Fla. Following their marriage, they moved to Whitley County.
