COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County rivals Churubusco and Columbia City met on the volleyball court at the Donald S. Weeks Gymnasium Tuesday night, treating the fans in attendance to a very competitive match.
Visiting Churubusco took the first game with a very emotional performance, but host Columbia City regrouped to take the next three games to record the 3-1 win.
The win pushes the Columbia City record to 4-0 as they head into Thursday night’s showdown with Concordia, while Churubusco’s record moves to 3-3 as they head to Eastside also on Thursday.

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s tennis team picked up its first win of the season Tuesday night, against Northeast Corner Conference foe Central Noble.
The Eagles won 3-2 in Churubusco, with victories in both doubles matches and No. 3 singles.
The No. 1 doubles team of Brandon Wormcastle and Landon Person won 6-1, 6-0 over Cougars Jared Estep and Devon Barr. Andrew Biddle and Brian Murphy of the No. 2 doubles team defeated Central Noble’s Colton Conrad and Caleb Harlan in a match that went to three sets.

COLUMBIA CITY — A drug sting in Churubusco has resulted in the arrest of four Indianapolis residents, three on drug and gun charges and one for promoting prostitution, according to the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department.
Three of the four were in Whitley County Circuit Court Monday for initial hearings.
Arrested were:
•Sue Kellems, 21, charged with dealing in a schedule II controlled substance, a Class B felony, possession of a controlled substance, a Class D felony and carrying a handgun without a license, a Class A misdemeanor.
CHURUBUSCO — Every nut, bolt, fender, wire, spark plug, motor and rim have been polished, replaced and the car is brand new. But yet it is still a 1955 Chevy.
With more than 2,000 man hours chalked on it Mike Herzog, 64, of Churubusco, considers it a “labor of love” to put the Chevy back together.
Bob Green, 67, of Ege, purchased the ‘55 Chevy from his brother-in-law’s (Kerry Boggs) grandmother.
“It had 55,000 original miles on it,” said Green.
He purchased the car for his then 15-year old son, Rick, to drive but it just sat in the garage.

COLUMBIA CITY — A Warsaw man admitted guilt in Whitley County court Monday on charges related to a rolling methamphetamine lab that went out of control near Larwill in April.
Trever Hanlon, 36, pleaded guilty in Whitley County Circuit Court to included manufacture of methamphetamine, a Class B felony, possession of two or more “precursors,” or ingredients used to make the drug, a Class D felony and maintaining a common nuisance, a Class D felony.

Rodger C. Smith, age 67, of Columbia City, passed away at 5:32 a.m. Sunday Aug. 26, 2012, at his home.
Born on May 22, 1945, in San Francisco, Calif., he was the son of Rodger C. and Ruth L. (Gibson) Smith.
He had been a Columbia City resident since 1973. He graduated from Polytechnic High School in San Francisco, Calif. with the class of 1963.
Lowell Allan Weeks, 68, of Columbia City, passed away at 7:35 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012, at Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home, Fort Wayne.
Born April 21, 1944, in Wolf Lake, he was the son of Paul and Mildred (Gawthrop) Weeks.
A resident of Columbia City most of his lifetime, he attended Columbia City High School and served in the National Guard.
On Oct. 4, 1969, he married Sandra Weston in Columbia City. For 31 years, he worked at General Electric, Fort Wayne, as a fork lift operator.
LARWILL — This past weekend marked the 158th year for Squawbuck Days in Larwill.
According to organizer Hal Trump everything was well attended.
“For the little village of Larwill, 24 cars turned out for the car show,” said Trump. “I think that is very good.”
“The pony pull was pretty good and a lot of people attended it,” said Trump.
The tenderloin dinner, Bingo, breakfast, ham and bean dinner and the concert featuring Larry and The Boys were all well attended.
Larry Secrist helped Trump organize Squawbuck Days.
CHURUBUSCO — The Young and Spencer families hope all will join them on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 16, as they host their annual memorial picnic benefit, celebrating the lives of Megan Young and Andy Spencer.
Megan was the daughter of Chris and Tanya Young. Andrew was a son of Cathy and Mike Spencer, all of Churubusco.
Andy was a member of the Churubusco High School Class of 2010, and Megan was a member of the CHS Class of 2011.
Both were killed in an automobile accident July 16, 2009, not far from both of their homes in rural Churubusco.
Everyone is welcome to attend the event.

WEST LAFAYETTE — Columbia City’s boys and girls cross country teams both placed ninth at the Purdue Invitational Saturday.
The girls were led by Samantha Roush, who competed in her first meet this season after sitting out for an injury. Roush placed 16th out of 375 runners with a time of 20:05.
Evan Harney led the boys with a 22nd-place finish out of 190 runners with a time of 17:11.
