CHURUBUSCO â The event was a corporation meeting for the staff of Smith-Green Community Schools.
But with school beginning next week all over Whitley County, the advice that educational expert Ralph Bailey gave could help any educator.
Bailey, 85, SGCSâs interim superintendent, spoke to the many teachers, aides, administrators, maintenance and cafeteria staff Wednesday.
His topic was âGrowing Together.â
He gave each person in attendance a packet of sunflower seeds and a can with a label which read âI Can!â
COLUMBIA CITY â After an assessment was made on the Burnworth Memorial Pool, Columbia City Mayor Ryan Daniel said there are many tough decisions ahead for the park board concerning this issue, as two upcoming forums will be held to allow members of the public a chance to give their opinions.
âWeâre hoping the public forums will give a pretty good feeling for what the community wants, and furthermore, if they want something, how they want to pay for that something,â said Daniel. âThat will be a very good and interesting discussion.â
COLUMBIA CITY â Columbia Cityâs mayor addressed the use of sirens at Tuesdayâs meeting of the Board of Works and Safety. He said the issue had received numerous inquires from local residents.
âThe whole reason I put it on the agenda was because there were a lot of questions from the public as to why the tornado sirens were not put off when the big wind storm came through during Old Settlers Days,â said Mayor Ryan Daniel.
Eleanor Jean Gordon, 86, passed away Monday, Aug. 13, 2013, at 1:30 p.m. She was born November 14, 1925, in Tampa, Fla., to Arthur Gilbert Lester and Mona Lester.
Eleanor worked as an FBI file clerk during World War II, a cook at Huntertown Schools and retired from Magnavox in Ft. Wayne.
Gerald âJerryâ M. Cowan, 82, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012. Born in Fort Wayne, Jerry grew up in Whitley County and worked for International Harvester and Rea Magnet Wire, retiring in 1986.
He was a member of Leo United Methodist Church, Past Commander and Life Member of American Legion Post 409, Leo, 50 year member of Leo Lodge No. 224 F.& A.M., Mizpah Shrine, Scottish Rite and charter and life member of the Mizpah Antique Power Club.
Jerry enjoyed family gatherings, carving, woodworking, fishing and euchre.
Donna J. (Armer) Mooney, 59, resident of Tri-Lakes, and formerly of Albion, died on Monday, Aug. 13, peacefully with family by her side, at Parkview North Hospital in Fort Wayne. Mrs. Mooney had been in declining health for the last year.
She was born on Nov. 8, 1952, in King City, Calif., and was the daughter of Dorothy (Shankle) and Zelbert Lee Armer.
She graduated high school in 1971, in Paso Robles, Calif., and married Barry Mooney in June, 1973. He passed away in 2002.

CHURUBUSCO â There is a new town marshal in Churubusco and his name is Mike Engle.
Long-time Whitley County sheriffâs deputy and recent Churubusco deputy town marshal, Engle was unanimously voted the town marshal at the town council meeting Wednesday.
The council had to find a new town marshal after Chad Fulkerson took a full-time position of school resource officer at Smith-Green Community Schools. Fulkerson tendered his resignation just moments before Engle was voted on.
Frank Kessler, council president, said the council interviewed three internal candidates.
COLUMBIA CITY â With the county adopting a golf cart ordinance,Columbia City is in the process of reviewing and making changes to its ordinance governing the alternative vehicles.
âThe rules and regulations, as far as the way the ordinance reads, are very similar to the county as far as the equipment and regulations over the passing years,â said Police Chief Timothy Longenbaugh at the Columbia City Board of Works and Safety meeting Tuesday.
Longenbaugh said the department has received several calls about people asking questions on the city and county permits.
COLUMBIA CITY â A public hearing is scheduled for tonight at 7 p.m. in the Coesse Elementary School regarding a utilities study that will provide residents and property owners in that area with several options on extending water and sewer services to the community. âIt will also have anticipated costs along with that,â said Jeff Walker, community development director of Columbia City at the Columbia City Common Council meeting Tuesday.
