BLUE RIVER TRAIL: Project begins Saturday

COLUMBIA CITY — Mayor Ryan Daniel and the Columbia City Park Board will be breaking ground on the new Blue River Trail Extension Saturday.
The ground breaking will take place on the north side of U.S. 30 in Morsches Park at 12:30 p.m.
According to Columbia City Park Director Mark Green, the project will extend the trail eight tenths of a mile, which will open up the park to citizens on the north side of the city.
Green said the extension will begin just south of the pond in Morshes Park, cross over the river and end near DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home.

ETA: Phase III bids approved

COLUMBIA CITY — The Whitley County Consolidated Board of School Trustees approved construction bids for Phase III Development of Eagle Tech Academy, with hopes the project will be finished by next year.
“The lowest bid on the project of the five bidders was $1,948,572, of Hamilton Hunter (Builders) out of Fort Wayne,” said school board member Anthony Zickgraf at Monday’s meeting. “Out of the five bids, they were all within about 2.5 percent of each other.”

MELODIC MEMORIES: Alumni band strikes a chord

COLUMBIA CITY — Tonight is homecoming at Columbia City High School (CCHS) and many students will create memories that will follow them throughout their adult lives. But for a group of CCHS alumni, memories of the past will make way for new homecoming memories.
For the second year, Helen Hockemeyer, CCHS band director, has organized a band comprised of high school alumni for homecoming night.
After last year’s turn out of 16, Hockemeyer decided to put the alumni band together again. Classes represented in the group went as far back as 1950.

Marian Hedrick, 75

Marian A. (Ringger) Meyer Hedrick, 75, of Ft. Wayne, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012.
Raised in Grover Hill, Ohio, Marian attended Grover Hill High School where she graduated as Salutatorian and graduated with honors from Defiance College in 1958.
She had taught at Bryan, Ohio High School. For the last 37 years, she was a professional life insurance agent with New York Life in Ft. Wayne.
She attended Taylor Chapel United Methodist Church. Her interests included gardening, nature, animals, bridge, piano and ballroom dancing. She was also an avid reader.

RaeAnne Minnix, 43

COLUMBIA CITY — RaeAnne “Rae” A. Minnix, 43, of Paulding, Ohio, died at 7:15 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, at home.
She was born May 23, 1969, in Auburn, to Arthur D. and LaDial E. (Hawn) White, who preceded her in death.
She was a talented musician who loved to play the guitar, and the piano. She was, also, an inspirational writer.
