POOL SURVEYS: Available at upcoming Fall Festival

COLUMBIA CITY — As of Tuesday’s Columbia City Council meeting, Mayor Ryan Daniel said the city has received more than 70 surveys concerning Burnworth Memorial Pool. With feedback rolling in, the city plans to obtain even more opinions at the upcoming Fall Festival.
“That’s really taken off right now,” said Park Director Mark Green. “We’re getting a lot of feedback and that’s what we’re after, to kind of get what people are thinking about that topic.”

Plow Day cancelled
The annual Plow Day event in South Whitley has been cancelled this year. The committee has already planned that the 2013’s Plow Day will be on Friday at Roy and Mary Rubrake’s Farm in South Whitley. Be prepared for a wonderful day in the country.

Benefit dinner
A benefit for James M. Beck will be Friday and Saturday, at 6 p.m. at Four D’s Bar and Grill, 1820 W. Dupont Rd., Fort Wayne.
James M. Beck. Beck passed away Aug. 11 in a drowning accident at Old Lake in Columbia City. The benefit, held in Beck’s honor is for those 21 years old and older.

S. WHITLEY: Man pleads guilty to gun incident

COLUMBIA CITY — Phillip Kessie, a 37-year-old South Whitley resident, plead guilty in Whitley County Circuit Court Monday to a gun incident that occurred in May.
According to a police report, South Whitley Police Officer Rick Carroll was notified May 6 by dispatch that Kessie had been calling his wife at her sister-in-law’s residence, threatening to kill himself.
According to the report, Carroll waited near the area to see if Kessie would show up while Whitley County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Geist went to the Kessie’s residence to see if he was still there.

GOLF CARTS: City passes ordinance

COLUMBIA CITY — An amendment to the golf cart ordinance was passed on second reading at the Columbia City Common Council meeting Tuesday.
Mayor Ryan Daniel said the change will help the city better determine whether the operator of a golf cart has a city permit.
In order to distinguish whether citizens operating golf carts in the city have a city permit, the ordinance requires a placard or decal to be applied on the golf cart.

Joe Jackson, a maintenance man with Whitko Community School Corporation, replaces an exterior light in the front of Whitko High School Tuesday morning. The Whitko Community School Corporation’s Board of School Trustees will meet in the board room at Pierceton Elementary School Monday at 7:30 p.m. During the meeting, Boy Scout John Langmaid, Jr. will be recognized as an Eagle Scout. The board will hear about Langmaid’s sidewalk building project which helped him earn the rare honor as part of Boy Scout Troop 85 in South Whitley.

S.W. BOARD: Town’s problems inherited

SOUTH WHITLEY — The leadership of South Whitley is making no bones about the need for improvement in the town — and the reasons the town is in its current shape.
“This is cleaning up a lot of stuff that has occurred for a lot of years,” said South Whitley Town Council President Tony Starkey at Tuesday night’s regular meeting.
The board heard complaints from residents regarding fluctuating utility bills, which board members Starkey, Steve Smith and Bill Boggs all agree was a result of what they call an ill-advised contract entered into with Duke Energy.

LARWILL GUN INCIDENT: Guilty plea entered

COLUMBIA CITY — Michael Frankhart, 30, pleaded guilty in Whitley County Circuit Court Monday on four counts relating to an incident that occurred at the Larwill Deli in May.
According to a Whitley County Sheriff Department case report, Dispatch received a 911 call May 6 from the attendant at the Larwill Deli, located at 207 N. Center St. in Larwill.
