Winning an Emmy is the highest achievement in television. One Whitley County man, with his team of co-workers, has won one of the coveted awards.
JJ Geiger, formerly of Columbia City, won for his work entitled âOpenhouse.â
âI worked as a producer/editor and won the Emmy in the category of âInformation/Public Affairs Series (more than 50 percent remote)â,â said Geiger.
He worked alongside of Janel Tamares, Julee Margulies Metz and Eric Michael Wong.
âThe crew submitted three segments from the show which airs regionally on NBC in 10 to 15 different markets,â said Geiger.
Columbia City's boys basketball team lost to DeKalb with a last-second shot earlier this season. The Eagles face the Barons in the first round of sectionals Tuesday. Thursday morning's fog has delayed and canceled local schools. Whitley County Consolidated schools are canceled and Smith-Green Community is on a 3-hour delay. Whitko did not have a delay or cancellation.
Northeast Indiana has a DENSE FOG ADVISORY until 11 a.m. today.
COLUMBIA CITY â Dense fog that started as light icy precipitation in Northern Indiana is descending and spreading across Whitley County.
Icy roads north of Whitley County caused traffic accidents early today, while the pea soup fog is rapidly causing visibility issues across the area.
Motorists and pedestrians are advised to take special precautions until conditions improve.
COLUMBIA CITY â Gasoline prices in Whitley County surged 25 cents overnight to $3.69 a gallon, causing Thursday morning consternation for local motorists.
Questions abound for tight-budgeted citizens who have been told to brace for $4 per gallon prices by Memorial Day â and perhaps $5 this summer.
As if on cue, the White House is scheduled to address American gas prices later Thursday.
February 22nd
ALBION â Kathryn Joan Secrist, 72, of Albion, passed away at 6:48 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20, 2012, at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home, Fort Wayne.
She was born Jan. 24, 1940, in Plymouth, the daughter of Richard Max and Pearl Irene (Tracy) Burgh.
A former resident of Mentone and Goshen, she moved to Merriam 24 years ago.
She attended Etna Green High School and was a housewife and homemaker.
She was a member of Curbside Cruisers, Fort Wayne, Route 30 Car Cruisers, Columbia City and Cornerstone Wesleyan Church, Merriam.
Pete N. Miller, 73, passed away Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, at Villages Hospital in The Villages Fla.
Born Nov. 8, 1938, in Daviess County, Pete worked as a self employed home building contractor for 42 years.
He was a member of The Chapel, Home Builders Association and Blackhawk Ministries.
COLUMBIA CITY â Ruth M. Bowser, 86, formerly of Washington Township, died at 5:15 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20, 2012, at Renaissance Village where she had been a resident since 2007.
She was born Aug. 3, 1925, in Munising, Mich., a daughter of Harley E. and Sallie (Riley) Adair.
As a sophomore in high school, she moved to the Chicago area with her brother.
She graduated from Walter High School in Chicago in 1943. After graduation she moved to Fort Wayne.
Dean L. Jines, 72, of Columbia City, passed away at 9:37 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012, at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home, Fort Wayne.
Born March 7, 1939, in Wabash, he was the son of Leslie T. Jines and Anna (Ridenour) Brooks.
He was raised in Wabash County where he graduated from Wabash City Schools.
From 1956-1962, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
On May 10, 1958, he married Vonnie L. Boardman in Wabash.
In 1973, he and his family moved to Whitley County, moving to Auburn in 1990 and Fort Wayne in 1993.
He returned to Columbia City in 1997.
Fredrick J. Harroff, 72, of Columbia City, passed away at 1:40 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, at his home.
Born Sept. 16, 1939, in Churubusco, he was the son of Herbert Theodore and Bethel Marie (Pennington) Harroff.
A Whitley County resident most of his lifetime, he attended several high schools and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy.
On Dec. 17, 1963, he married Sherry Lindell Williams in Albion, Noble County.
He worked as a warehouseman for 30 years at Food Marketing, Fort Wayne.
He was a member of the Churubusco American Legion Post #157.
