FORT WAYNE — Three Whitley County wrestlers traveled to the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum Saturday for the IHSAA Semi-State competition, hoping to qualify for a trip to Banker’s Life Fieldhouse and the IHSAA Individual State Finals Wrestling Tournament.

FIRE: Friday afternoon garage fire near Loon Lake put out quickly

Local firefighters battled a garage fire Friday afternoon at 3321 W. Keck Rd. near Loon Lake. According to the Whitley County GIS site, the home is deeded to James and Linda Hale. Firefighters received the call at approximately 12:30 p.m. and the fire was marked “under control” by 1:05 p.m. Richland Township, Thorncreek Township and Noble County firemen all responded to the scene. Churubusco advances to sectional final with win over Adams Central

MONROE — Coming off an opening round sectional win over South Adams Tuesday, Churubusco’s girls basketball team traveled to Adams Central High School to play the hosting Lady Flying Jets in its second round
The Lady Eagles knocked off their opponent, 31-24, and will head back today to face Fort Wayne Bishop Luers for the sectional championship.

“I’m proud of our girls for sticking together and giving us a change to win a sectional,” said ‘Busco Head Coach Jamie Perlich.

Col. City loses sectional semi-final to Fort Wayne Sliders

CARROLL — Lady Eagle basketball season has come to a close. In round two of sectional play Friday, Columbia City traveled to Carroll, host of the Class 4A Sectional 5, and lost to Fort Wayne Snider in a tough fought contest. The Lady Panthers were victorious by a score of 56-47, a much smaller margin than the 35-point Snider victory in November.

Whitko's season done, lose to Bellmont

GAS CITY — Whitko’s girls basketball team battled back from a 34-14 third-quarter deficit to come within four points of a win Friday night in the semi-final sectional game at Mississinewa against Bellmont.

After a 26-13 advantage at halftime, the Squaws scored six points to the Lady ’Cats’ one, giving Whitko a 20-point deficit with just over three minutes left in the third quarter.

NATIONALLY RANKED: Parkview Whitley Nurses earn national honor

COLUMBIA CITY — Parkview Whitley Hospital’s nursing staff has received a national accolade, according to a hospital press release.
The hospital announced Friday it had been chosen as the recipient of the American Nurses Association’s (ANA) National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) Award for Outstanding Nursing Quality for a Community Hospital in the year 2011. The award recognizes hospitals that improve patient outcomes and maintain high nurse job satisfaction, the hospital said, adding that the NDNQI is the nation’s most comprehensive database of nursing performance measures.

8-POINTER: Teen bags big buck

COLUMBIA CITY — A Columbia City High School senior will soon be featured on television harvesting the trophy of a lifetime. Tanner Pfeiffer 18, of Columbia City, was hunting with his father, John, last October in Pampa, Texas when he shot a large whitetail deer with his high-powered rifle.

The hunt was filmed for a TV show called “The Way Outfitters Adventures,” which airs on the Sportsman’s Channel on Thursday nights at 10:30 p.m. and again Friday at 10:30 a.m. Tanner’s episode airs Feb. 23 at 10:30 p.m. and again Feb. 24 at 10:30 a.m.

Pearlie Garrison, 90

Pearlie Garrison, 90, of rural Churubusco and widow of Marion A. “Gary” Garrison, passed away at 8:20 p.m. Feb. 8, 2012, at North Ridge Village Nursing Home in Albion following an extended illness.
She had been a patient there for the past year.
Mrs. Garrison was born Oct. 10, 1921, to Ben and Nancy (Rowe) Clemons in Guage, Ky. She moved to this area in her teens, married Marion A. “Gary” Garrison, and had lived in this area all of her adult life.
She was a homemaker, was a member of Churubusco Church of the Nazarene, and was a member of a pinochle card club.

Nadean Zorger, 84

Nadean May Zorger, 84, of Huntington and formerly of South Whitley, passed away at 3:25 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012, at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
She was born Aug. 24, 1927, in Jefferson Township, the daughter of Russell F. and Beulah A. (Shroyer) Taylor.
She spent her childhood in Jefferson Township, graduating from Jefferson Center High School with the class of 1945.
She married Marvin Leo “Tim” Zorger on Oct. 5, 1947, at Jefferson Chapel United Methodist Church.
She lived at her South Whitley home from 1966 until 2009 when she moved into Huntington.
