COLUMBIA CITY â€” Whitley County Commissioner Tom Rethlake grew up on farmlands in Huntington County where he attended the now defunct Union Center High School. While there, he played basketball and baseball.
He went on to play both sports for four years at Huntington College, being named to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division II all-conference team for basketball during a season in which he was one of the leading scorers in the state.
FORT WAYNE â€” Led by Head Coach Scott Kreiger and his father, Wayne Kreiger, former long-time Columbia City head coach as his assistant, Tuesday nightâ€™s match-up between Canterbury and Whitko was different than just the average game.
Wayne Kreiger spent 33 years as a CCHS Lady Eagle head coach â€“ 33 years of experience against rival Whitko. Along with the Kreigers is freshman Darby Maggard, who transferred to Canterbury this season from Whitko.

CHICAGO â€” Fifth-year senior Leah Eber earned the Big Ten Co-Field Athlete of the Week after her performance at the Gene Edmonds Cup against Indiana State over the weekend.
Eber won all three events in which she was entered and helped Purdue retain the cup for the 17th consecutive year. Eber started the day off by winning the long jump. She posted a mark of 6.25m, the second longest of her career and a meet record.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” The Whitley County Board of Commissioners had a full slate of business in front of them when they met last week following the holiday. Several contracts and permits for construction were among the items discussed.
A previously discussed contract to renew with the facility used to house juvenile inmates that was tabled while wording was changed has been signed.
The Columbia City Board of Works will meet today at 5:15 p.m. in the conference room at City Hall for a regular session.

Eric Pfaff, of Lewis Center, Ohio, begins carving what would become the winning ice sculpture at the 7th Annual Fire & Ice Winterfest, which was held Saturday and Sunday in downtown Columbia City.
Brisk temperatures and clear skies made for the perfect scenario for the festival. Pfaff also won peopleâ€™s choice and mayorâ€™s choice.
Pfaff was stationed at the northwest corner of Courthouse Square midday on Saturday, using an electric-powered chain saw to begin his creation, which was a sculpture of a bear and a bull.
Carla Anne Cooper, 57, of Columbia City, passed away at 8:25 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012, at Lutheran Hospital of Indiana, Fort Wayne.
On March 20, 1954, in Fort Knox, Ky., she was the oldest of three daughters born to Maynard E. and Beverly J. (Pence) Harrold.
As a child, she resided in Columbia City where she graduated from Columbia City Joint High School with the Class of 1972.
She graduated in 1976 from Indiana University with a bachelorâ€™s degree in Psychology and French with distinction.
Carla earned a masterâ€™s degree in Education in 1994 from Valparaiso University.
