ELKHART â Maxine (Palmer) Hursey, 89, of Elkhart, passed away Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, at Elkhart Rehabilitation Center.
Mrs. Hursey was born April 10, 1922, in Whitley County to Jesse and Ethel (Garrison) DePoy.
She was married to J. Marion Palmer on Aug. 14, 1940. He preceded her in death on Jan. 31, 1985.
On Feb. 24, 1990, she married Edgar A. Hursey. He also preceded her in death Dec. 25, 1999.
Nathan Ronald Castor, 27, formerly of Kendallville, died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012.
He was born March 9, 1984, in Bristol, Penn., a son of Ronald C. and Connie (Fulk) Castor.
Surviving relatives include his parents, Ronald and Connie Castor of Kendallville; a sister, Miranda Heitz of Clearwater, Fla; a nephew, Ezra Heitz; aunts and uncles Joanne Etersque, Vincent Castor, Maria Faight, Kathleen Thompson, Annette Castor, Christopher Makai, Joan Rose, and Steve Fulk; and numerous cousins.
Grace Akers, 89, a former resident of rural Churubusco in Noble County and widow of Donald G. Akers, died at 2:55 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012, at Renaissance Village Nursing Home.
She was born in Van Wert, Ohio Sept. 4, 1922, a daughter of Homer and Lucy D. (Ingmire) Murphy.
She was married in Fort Wayne on Aug. 30, 1942, to Donald G. Akers.
Mr. Akers preceded her in death on April 26, 1994.
KENDALLVILLE â At Saturdayâs Northeast Hoosier Conference Tournament held at East Noble High School, a slow start by the Columbia City Eagles relegated them to a seventh-place finish.
Kyle Burns picked up the first win for the Eagles in the 138-pound weight class, downing Homesteadâs Andy Papadakis to advance to the semifinals.
The other Eagle to pick up a win in the first round was junior Russell Hazelet in the 182-pound weight class. Hazelet, the third seed, picked up his first round win.
SOUTH WHITLEY â The Lady Wildcats basketball team came into Saturday looking for its third win in a row. Northfield was looking for its fourth victory in five tries.
Unfortunately for Whitko, the Lady Norse achieved their goal, mounting a double-digit comeback to beat the Lady Wildcats, 59-47.
Jordan Hall got Whitko on the board early with an inside basket before the Northfield hit four straight from the foul line to take a 4-2 lead.
The Lady Norse scored 4-of-8 shots from the line in the first quarter, stemming from six Lady Wildcat fouls.

PIERCETON â By unanimous vote, Whitko Community School Corporation board vice president Jorell Tucker was elected as president for the WCSC Board of Finance and board secretary Roger Boggs as secretary for the Board of Finance in Monday eveningâs finance meeting.
Director of Financial Operations Tom McFarland discussed last yearâs total investments, which earned $21,886.95.
PIERCETON â With state legislatures having 167 bills which will ultimately affect school education, Whitko Community School Corporationâs Superintendent Steve Clason is unsure how many of the bills will require a committee hearing.
Clason provided a detailed update on a few legislature bills which may affect the corporation at its Board of School Trustees regular monthly meeting Monday evening.
âWho knows how many of them (167 bills) will get a committee hearing or actually get to the docket,â Clason said.
COLUMBIA CITY â Ellen Hively is a true blue bona fide domesticated tomboy.
She sews, cans, hunts, butchers, gardens, fishes â but most notably she donates her blood.
This Whitley County gal has a heart of gold and she proved that when she received the American Red Cross distinguished honor of being named Whitley Countyâs Outstanding Donor during January which is National Blood Donor Month.
Hively has donated 216 pints of blood so far and in March she will hit the 27 gallon mark.
âIt renews my body. I build new blood platelets every time,â she said.

COLUMBIA CITY â The Columbia City Police Departmentâs newly-appointed detectives began their first full week on the job this week.
Robert Stephenson and Gary Archbold were chosen by CCPD Chief Tim Longenbaugh and Captain Tony Hively last week, to replace their (Longenbaugh and Hivelyâs) former positions.
âIts a great opportunity to expand my law enforcement background,â Archbold said.
Archbold and Stephenson have more than a decade of experience on the CCPD with 13 and 14 years respectively.
