SOUTH WHITLEY – Last October the Friends of the Eel River Trail obtained a 1,600-foot length of the abandoned railbed of the Eel River Railroad in South Whitley.
This parcel of land was previously owned by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
A gravel path runs along the railbed from Calhoun Street in South Whitley through beautiful quiet woods to the old railroad trestle east of town.

DECATUR — One observer at the press table Friday night at the Bellmont gym wryly noted, “the first team to 30 will win.”
That prediction came true as Columbia City held on to win a 35-29 girls varsity decision over Bellmont in Northeast Hoosier Conference action by shutting down the Bellmont inside game with what Eagle coach Amy Shearer called “good pressure and a good defensive effort.”
FREMONT — Churubusco girls basketball got down early Friday and was never able to recover, losing to Fremont Lady Eagles 49-31.
The ‘Busco Lady Eagles kept it close in the first quarter, scoring nine points to Fremont’s 12.
“We played well in the first quarter,” Churubusco Head Coach Jamie Perlich said. “Then we started struggling defensively.
“When we play well on defense the rest falls together. We started getting tired and started standing up instead of moving our feet on defense and our shots stopped falling.”
Jennie V. Weber, 96, North Manchester, died at 1:34 a.m. Friday, Jan. 6, 2012 in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.
She was born Oct. 9, 1915, in Landess, to LaMoine and Ruth (McVicker) Pulley).
On April 7, 1934, she married Milan E. Torpy. He died June 13, 1968.
On June 28, 1977, she married George W. Weber. He died September 8, 1981.
COLUMBIA CITY — Despite July 2011’s ban on synthetic marijuana, commonly known as “spice”, is still prevalent in Whitley County and much of Indiana.
Though the marijuana-like drug can’t be found on shelves at local businesses, Whitley County Drug Task Force Leader and Sheriff’s Detective Bill Brice said people are going to Fort Wayne or buying the substance on the internet.
“The ordinance has helped keep the illegal stuff off the shelves, but it’s still out there,” Brice said.

COLUMBIA CITY — Sworn in at the earlier Board of Works meeting, the department heads returned to give their reports.
Park Director Mark Green reported that tickets for the department’s annual Father-Daughter Dance are now on sale at the Park Office and City Hall.
The dance will be held Feb. 3 at First Church of God in Columbia City and begins at 6 p.m.
Cost is $25 for a father-daughter combination, and $10 for an additional daughter.

John Davis and teammate Audrey Gruettert dove Thursday night at Homestead in the conference meet. The meet will conclude Saturday with the swim events, starting at 11 a.m.

Sacred music concert at West Etna Community Church Jan. 13
LARWILL – The Moody Chorale, conducted by Dr. Xiangtang Hong of the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago, will be performing Friday, Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at West Etna Community Church near Larwill.
West Etna Community Church is located at 6552W-750N in northwest Whitley County.
Founded in 1946, the Moody Chorale has long been established as one of the leading collegiate choral organizations in the United States, specializing in sacred music.
