Editor’s note: The following is the fourth of a four-part series on Columbia City’s football team
COLUMBIA CITY — One might wonder if anything could have been done to prevent the onslaught of injuries the Columbia City football team suffered in 2012.
“Sometimes it’s just a freak-type injury,” said head coach Randy Hudgins. “You’re not really sure you can prevent that, especially with bone breaks and concussions.”
In regards to seasons to come, Hudgins said concentrated steps have already been taken to lessen the likelihood of players injuring themselves.
CHURUBUSCO — In the final regular season match, two Whitley County wrestling teams squared off on Churubusco’s Senior Night.
The host Eagles used an advantage in the upper weight classes to build a lead on their way to a 57-19 win over the visiting Whitko Wildcats.
With both teams heading into their conference tournaments Saturday, both the Eagles and the Wildcats were looking to establish some momentum.
Bouts started at 126 pounds, with Eagle sophomore Chase Downing scoring a pinfall win over Whitko’s Evan Cozad at the 1:02 mark of the first period, putting the hosts up 6-0.
COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City High School’s show choirs presented their competition shows for parents and choral supporters Thursday night.
City Lights, an all female choir, is accompanied by City Soul, an instrumental back-up band. City Heat is a mixed choir of boys and girls and is also supported by City Soul. Both groups are assisted by City Crew, a stage crew.
The choirs are under the direction of Rosalie Geller and choreographed by Jason Johnson. City Soul is directed by Carolyn Hindbaugh. Saturday, the groups will compete at Eastside High School in Butler.
COLUMBIA CITY — While some people in the country might feel they are still digging out of the Great Recession, some economic indicators show Whitley County might be back to normal.
The Community Research Institute (CRI) at IPFW released its 2012 document of business dynamics in Whitley County. Most of the findings showed growth in the county, with expansion in job numbers and dollars invested locally.
COLUMBIA CITY — Changes in technology have affected almost every sphere of life, with education being no exception.
Whitley County Consolidated Schools (WCCS) has looked at changes in how it purchases curriculum. The district, as it examines textbooks, also examines the software present. This has led to conversations regarding the future of technology for WCCS.
“You can look at things and say this is fabulous, and think you can do great things, but applied to larger scale it does not work with our hardware,” said Dr. Pat O’Connor, WCCS superintendent.
COLUMBIA CITY — Something old in Columbia City will have a new feel to it and could recharge memory banks for some in the community.
DeVol Field is having a baseball/softball diamond reconstructed with an estimated target for completion in the summer.
This is not the first time the field has been used for these sports in the town’s history.
When Morsches Park was constructed, the fields down at DeVol fell out of use. There will only be one field there in 2013, as opposed to the multiple fields that were there in the past. The timing will be impeccable for the city.

Churubusco grapplers top Whitko, 57-19
Rosemarie C. (Magers) Wright, 91, a former resident of Churubusco and Fort Wayne, and widow of William C. Wright, passed away at 5:55 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013.
Mrs. Wright was born in Fort Wayne on May 23, 1921, a daughter of Joseph I. and Elizabeth A. (Redinbaugh) Magers.
Surviving relatives include her two sons, a son-in-law, eight grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Churubusco with Father Jacob Gall, the celebrant.
Thomas E. Hesting, 69, of Columbia City, passed away at 3:15 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, at his home.
Born Dec. 20, 1943, in Huntington, he was the son of Walter and Lucille Margaret (Bauer) Hesting.
Tom spent his lifetime in Nix Settlement, Tunker, Collins and has lived at his present home since 1979.
He graduated from Churubusco High School with the Class of 1962. He also later in life took nursing courses at IPFW.
On Oct. 17, 1964, he married Sherry D. Parsons at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Willard, OH.
