FORT WAYNE — A scoring drought that lasted the final six minutes of the ball game allowed the host Northrop Lady Bruins to go on an 11-0 run and take a come-from-behind, 36-30, win over the visiting Columbia City Lady Eagle basketball team Tuesday night.
The Bruins held a 19-15 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Eagles were able to score from both the field and the free-throw line.
A basket and two free throws by Emily Whiteleather brought the Eagles within four at 25-21.
A 3-pointer by Alyssa Hansen brought the Eagles to within one at 25-24.
CHURUBUSCO — “The main goal will be business as usual,” said Paul Sade.
That’s the philosophy the Churubusco High School football team seems to be utilizing as it replaces former head coach Lee Etzler, who resigned Dec. 21, 2012.
Monday, it was announced Sade, the Eagles’ previous offensive line coach, will assume head coaching duties for the 2013 football season.
Sade was formally approved for hire as head football coach at the regular meeting of the Smith-Green Community Schools Board of School Trustees.
COLUMBIA CITY — Sara Goff’s trial in Whitley County Superior Court has been set for a different date.
Goff was set to appear in court for a jury trial today, Jan. 23 and tomorrow, Jan. 24. The defense council filed the motion to continue, and a new date for the trial has not been filed yet.
Goff was arrested in September 2011 for theft, a Class D felony.
At that time, she had been serving as Whitley County Chamber of Commerce president.
According to case reports, Goff was accused of cashing approximately $2,100 in “chamber bucks” between Dec. 1, 2010 and Sept. 13, 2011.
COLUMBIA CITY — With the big announcement of the acquisition of the old Scott’s building Tuesday, the normally scheduled meeting of the Columbia City Common Council had an economic development flavor to it, as a real estate company was granted a requested tax abatement.
COLUMBIA CITY — After closing its doors in 2007, the former Scott’s Food & Pharmacy location has a new tenant — Dunham’s Sports.
At a reception hosted by the Whitley County Economic Development Corporation Tuesday, Michigan-based real estate developer Jeff Kerr announced the sports retailer will occupy 60 percent of the building.
Kerr touted the support of the EDC and Columbia City.
“We are delighted to potentially have the opportunity to take a vacancy and hopefully warm it up and make it vibrant,” Kerr said.

Max Gerald Kaufman, 93, passed away on Jan. 16, 2013, in Bluffton.
Max was born to John Easton and Edna Kaufman May 22, 1919, in Whitley County.
After spending two years in the Army Air Corp he was honorably discharged in August of 1945 with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.
He returned to Whitley County to operate the family farm and also started his career at Dana Corporation retiring as a toolmaker in 1981.
