Columbia City and Columbia Township firemen responded to a house fire at 1090 S. CR 50 E. late Tuesday night. The blaze was spotted at approximately 10:30 p.m., and was under control in less than an hour. The four occupants, including home-owner Jameson Barnes, of the house escaped uninjured, but three pets were killed. Above, Columbia Township firemen look for fire in the ceiling of the home’s front porch. Columbia Township Fire Chief Jim Bohnstedt said the cause has not been determined. Bohnstedt said the house sustained at least $30,000 damage, and is most likely not a total loss.
CHURUBUSCO — Creating new memories is what inspired Tim Holmes, of Churubusco, to reopen Papa’s Place restaurant.
“Someone told me they would love their kids to be able to experience Papa’s Place,” said Tim. “Those kids who are now parents remember coming to Papa’s after school, having bread sticks and hanging out. That generation was really the last to get to do that. I am glad to offer that experience to today’s teens.”
COLUMBIA CITY — Carnival roller coasters rarely provide such sudden changes.
Weather in northeast Indiana has known many extremes in the month of January. Below-zero wind chill greeted the area a week-and-a-half ago, and Tuesday greeted citizens with record-warm temperatures.
Fort Wayne had a low temperature of 44 degrees Tuesday. This is the new record for warmest low temperature of the day. The previous mark was 43, set back in 2006.
Columbia City’s girls basketball team has its final home game Thursday night against Huntington North. The Lady Eagles (7-14) fell to the Lady Vikings (4-14) last season in a close 45-43 game.
COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s missing police dog was found Wednesday morning.
An Allen County Sheriff’s Deputy spotted Stryker, who had been in hiatus since Tuesday afternoon.
The police dog was found on Hathaway Road in Allen County at approximately 10 a.m. Wednesday morning.
The canine got out of his kennel Tuesday, and was spotted by a passing motorist at approximately 3 p.m. — sparking a search that lasted until dark.
Stryker had last been seen in the area of Ind. 205 and County Road 200 East, and was found a few miles into Allen County on Hathaway Road.

Stryker, a Columbia City police K9, has been found. The dog went missing Tuesday and was located Wednesday morning at approximately 10 a.m.
According to Columbia City Police Chief Tim Longenbaugh, the dog was found to be in good health. Longenbaugh said he was "very thrilled" to have the dog back. Stryker's handler, Tim Pittenger, will be taking Stryker to the vet for a complete examination. See more coverage in Thursday's Post & Mail.
William Wayne “Bill” May, 92, owner of Spring Creek Market, died at 8:24 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, at Miller’s Merry Manor, Columbia City.
He was born on Jan. 24, 1921, in Monroe County, a son of Ernest and Rose (Smiley) May. Â
Bill served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in southern Indiana during the late 1930s and early 1940s.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1942, and served in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines. He was honorably discharged from active service in 1945, and went to work for Phelps Dodge Corporation in Fort Wayne. Â

According to scanner traffic, Stryker, the missing Columbia City police K9, might have been found. Reports are unconfirmed on if the dog is actually the canine belonging to the department.
