TOYS FOR TOTS: CCFD, Marines join forces

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s fire department has found another way to give back to the community at Christmas time.

After more than 125 years of the Christmas Eve candy and orange giveaway at the Courthouse, the department is now helping children with the Toys for Tots program.

The department is partnering with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves under the guidance of the Leatherneck Coffee Club of Northern Indiana, which was founded in Columbia City in 2001.

Since then, thousands of children in need have received toys at Christmas.

Rachel Verba, 89

Rachel M. Verba, 89, formerly of Columbia City, died Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 9, 2013, at the home of her daughter, Liz, in Noblesville where she had been residing since August 2012.
She was born Sept. 15, 1924, in Whitley County, a daughter of Leo and Huldah J. (Palmer) Miller.
Her formative years were spent in Richland Township. She graduated from Larwill High School and completed her nurse’s training at Ball State.

Wildcats drop sectional semifinal against Cadets

FORT WAYNE — Whitko’s boys soccer team lost in a sectional semifinal to Fort Wayne Concordia Thursday.

The Cadets beat the Wildcats 9-0 in a Class 1A game played at Fort Wayne Bishop Luers.

Concordia had five goals in the first half and four in the second. Joshua Hillery of Concordia had three goals in the contest.

Fairfield downs Churubusco

GOSHEN — Churubusco’s volleyball team lost to NECC-rival Fairfield Thursday.

The Lady Falcons swept the Lady Eagles, 25-9, 25-15 and 25-17.

IN COURT: Man accused of stealing from parents

COLUMBIA CITY — A Columbia City man pleaded not guilty to burglary and theft charges Monday.

Stephen “Nathan” Lawrence, 23, was arrested Oct. 2 for those charges, as well as counts of residential entry and criminal mischief.

According to police, Lawrence allegedly broke into his parents’ home and stole items from their residence.

Lawrence will have his next pretrial conference in Whitley County Circuit Court Nov. 4 at 9 a.m.

Lady Eagles fall to Bellmont

COLUMBIA CITY — The measure of the heart of a team is not how badly it beats a lesser team, but how hard it plays against the very best of teams.

The Columbia City Lady Eagles showed that heart on senior night against the number three-ranked Bellmont Squaws Thursday night.

Though the Eagles fell in three games, 25-21, 25-20, 25-20, they played hard and pushed the visitors in each game.

'INADEQUATE FACILITIES': District discusses aquatics options

COLUMBIA CITY — With 2014 being the final year for Burnworth Memorial Pool, which city officials opted to close due to financial strains, the community is working together to discuss the future of aquatics — both recreational and competitive.

An Aquatics Task Force has been formed to assess options, and Whitley County Consolidated Schools addressed its needs at Monday’s Board of Trustees meeting.

Tim Bloom is part of the Aquatics Task Force speaking for the school board and the district’s swim teams.
