Girls basketball season officially opened practices around the state of Indiana on Monday.

Betty J. Rex, 86, of Columbia City, died at 4:54 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013 at Parkview Oaks where she had been a resident since August 2007.
She was born Sept. 19, 1927 in Whitley County a daughter of Wyland and Iva E. (Gump) Zumbrun. A lifelong resident of Whitley County, she graduated from Coesse High School.
On Dec. 25, 1947, she was united in marriage to Jackson A. “Jack” Rex. From 1972 until 1998, they spent their winters in Zapata, Texas. Mr. Rex died June 29, 2003.
She was employed at GE for 15 years and retired from United Technologies in 1980.

’Busco banks items for food drive

CHURUBUSCO — The Town of Churubusco recently announced its 2nd Annual Food Drive.

The town will be collecting non-perishable food and household items during the holiday season to donate to the Churubusco United Methodist Food Pantry.

Collections will occur from Nov. 1 until Dec. 12 at the Churubusco Government Center, 530 S. Main St.

“Please help make someone else’s holiday season a little brighter by donating,” said town officials. “With your donation, you will receive recognition on the ‘Door of Fame.’”

AMBULANCE OF A DIFFERENT COLOR: New paint discussion gets sticky

COLUMBIA CITY — One commissioner voted against a measure to allow new paint to be applied to Whitley County ambulances.

Whitley County’s Commissioners met last week, and on the agenda was a request made by Parkview Whitley Hospital to paint the county’s ambulances to match the ones used in Allen County.

However, as stated in the proposal, an emblem would be placed on the side designating the vehicles as Whitley County’s.

But considering the county actually owns the five ambulances, Commissioner Don Amber was not in favor of having the vehicles altered.

TREASURER: Don’t wait to pay property taxes

COLUMBIA CITY — Taxes — for some it is a five letter word that causes financial frustration. However, for Laurell Hodges dealing with taxes means its just another day as the Whitley County Treasurer.

Property taxes for the second annual installment are due Tuesday, Nov. 12. Although statements were mailed earlier in the year, Hodges wants property owners across the county to remember the date and to keep in mind that Monday, Nov. 11 is a holiday and county offices, including the Treasurer’s office, will be closed.

FAREWELL: Mossburg preps to move from Whitley Co. Salvation Army post

COLUMBIA CITY — After seven years serving Whitley County as the ministries director for Whitley County’s Salvation Army, Pat Mossburg is resigning her post effective Thursday.

“My last few weeks have gone by so fast,” Mossburg said. “There have been people stopping by telling me goodbye and giving me hugs. It’s been sort of emotional.”

A special open house was planned in Mossburg’s honor Monday at the Salvation Army’s office, inside the First Church of God in Columbia City.

IN COURT: 2012 Walgreens robber pleads guilty

COLUMBIA CITY— A man who robbed the Columbia City Walgreens in 2012 pleaded guilty in Whitley County Circuit Court Monday.

Troy J. Fritz, 31, pleaded guilty to robbery, a Class C felony, as part of a plea arrangement, which stipulated that the state would dismiss a charge of theft against him.

Fritz will be sentenced Dec. 2 at 8:30 a.m.

A Class C felony has a maximum sentence of eight years and a minimum of two, with four years being the advisory sentence.

Case reports state Fritz stole Opana and Fentanyl by threatening the use of force in February of 2012.
