HOME IMPROVEMENT: Santa to arrive to remodeled house in Columbia City

COLUMBIA CITY — Santa is comin’ to town Friday.

With lights, floats and music, a parade will usher Santa into downtown Columbia City to his house, which is set up on the northwest corner of the Whitley County Courthouse lawn.

The little red house has been a staple holiday sight for decades, according to Jill Winebrenner, who has been a long-time coordinator of Santa’s House.

Beginning Friday night and on through Christmas Eve, children can visit Saint Nick at his home and have their photos taken with the holiday figure.

SOUTH WHITLEY — South Whitley Elementary School’s Spell Bowl teams recently competed in state-wide event in Wabash at the Honeywell Center.
According to coaches, the fifth grade team did not fare as well as hoped. The group competed in the small-school division for fifth graders, but were not able to field a full team.

WCCS approves salary increases

COLUMBIA CITY — After nearly five years with no raises, Whitley County Consolidated Schools’ employees are getting a small bump next year.

The WCCS Board of Trustees approved a two-percent raise for school bus drivers, classified staff and administrators, effective in 2014.

“It has been several years since our employees have had increases,” WCCS Superintendent Pat O’Connor said.

Thanksgiving event

Pierceton UM
A community Thanksgiving service will be held at Pierceton United Methodist Church Wednesday at 7 p.m.
A non-perishable food item will be the only donation taken. All will be given to the Washington Township Food Pantry.

West Point Trinity UM
West Point Trinity United Methodist Church will hold a Thanksgiving service at 9:30 a.m. Thursday. The church is located at 4980 N. Etna Rd.

Thanksgiving Dinner
Columbia City Rotary Club will host a Community Thanksgiving Dinner Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the 4-H Center, Columbia City.

Melvin Schuman, 99

November 27, 2013

Melvin F. Schuman, 99, of South Milford, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, at his home. Mr. Schuman was born in Larwill Sept. 30, 1914, to Henry and Flossie (Harris) Schuman.
In 1944, he moved to LaGrange County from Columbia City, and Noble County.
Mr. Schuman retired from Monsanto in Ligonier, and had been a farmer and an avid gardener and crafter. He was a former member of LaGrange County Farm Bureau.
On March 15, 1934, in Plymouth, he married Lucy I. Spear. Mrs. Schuman preceded him in death on July 18, 2005.

Michael Wright,

Michael Allen Wright, 68, of Columbia City, passed away at 7:05 a.m. Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, at Lutheran Hospital of Indiana in Fort Wayne.
Born on June 12, 1945, in Worthington, Minn., he was the son of Gordon G. and Elizabeth L. (Ramert) Wright.
He was born and raised in Minnesota. Mike graduated from Fulda High School in Fulda, Minn. with the Class of 1963.
He entered the U.S. Marines and served from 1963 to 1967 during the Vietnam War.
Mike moved to Columbia City in 1971 and worked at the Indiana Air National Guard from 1972 until retiring as a Senior Master Sgt. in 2001.

Lawrence Henney, 81

Lawrence Dean “Shorty” Henney, 81, of Columbia City, passed away at 9:05 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013, at Miller’s Merry Manor Inc., Columbia City.
Born June 22, 1932, in Columbia City, he was the son of Clair E. and Bessie M. (Lawrence) Henney.
He was a lifetime resident of Jefferson Township, graduating from Jefferson Center High School.

Rosalie Warner, 89

November 27, 2013

Rosalie Charlotte Warner, 89, of Columbia City, passed away at 10:02 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013, at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City.
Born on June 23, 1924, in Vevay, she was the daughter of Thomas James and Dora Ellen (Poling) Scroggin.
She lived in Switzerland County (Vevay) then moved to Fort Wayne, in 1984 and moved to Columbia City in 2009. She attended St. Mary’s Vevay Madison Consolidated Schools.
On Sept. 12, 1944, she married Charles Rae Warner in Battlecreek, Mich.

Rachel Brandenburg (right), was recently named the winner of the monthly drawing held at the November Parent-Teacher Organization meeting for Pierceton Elementary School. Rochelle Leininger (left), PTO co-president, awarded Brandenburge this month’s prize which was a Bob Evans gift card. The next PTO meeting will be held Monday, Jan. 20. All parents attending are eligible for the drawing.

Task force collects phones for Hopeline project

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County collected 138 used cell phones in connection with Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. Many local businesses, hospitals, restaurants, churches, schools, etc. had HopeLine collection boxes displayed at their locations.

The HopeLine project, which was sponsored by the Domestic Violence Task Force of Whitley County, is new this year, and the group is pleased with the results and grateful to all the locations that collected phones.
