Eagles fall to Prairie Heights

LAGRANGE — Churubusco’s boys basketball team dropped a 65-55 contest to Prairie Heights Friday night.

The Eagles had a 31-24 advantage at halftime, but Prairie Heights outscored ’Busco 41-24 to steal the win from the Eagles.

Churubusco was led in scoring by Brent Simmons with 22 points, followed by T.J. Campbell with 15.

Campbell hit 5-of-9 3-pointers for the Eagles in his 15 points.

Simmons was Churubusco’s leading rebounder with nine, followed by Corey Sarrazin with five and Garrett Simmons with three.

T. Valley runs over Whitko

SOUTH WHITLEY — In what has been the start to a struggling season, Whitko’s boys basketball team suffered another loss Friday night, falling in a Three Rivers Conference matchup with Tippecanoe Valley, 59-40.

Despite the 19-point loss, the Wildcats didn’t go down without a fight.

After trailing most of the game, down 10-6 after the first quarter, 24-10 at halftime and 40-27 going into the fourth quarter, Whitko battled back to come within eight points with seven minutes on the clock.

Col. City woman admits to probation violation

COLUMBIA CITY — A Columbia City woman admitted Monday she violated her probation.

Heather Burns, 28, was on probation for multiple drug-related charges.
Her probation officer, Ed Beber, had made a petition alleging a probation violation. The petition stated Burns had tested positive for a controlled substance.

Monday, by the counsel of her attorney, Brad Voelz, Burns admitted her violation.

Voelz said he advised Burns to admit the violation and try to get on work release or home detention.

Commissioners bring county gov’t to CCHS

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County Commissioners and county officials took center stage at Columbia City High School Monday.

High school government students were brought to the auditorium to observe the Commissioners’ meeting in order to learn how local government operates.

“I think it’s good for us to get out to the schools,” said Commissioner Don Amber at a previous meeting. “Sometimes they have really good comments and suggestions. It never hurts to introduce teenagers to their local government.”

Construction plans revealed for PES

PIERECTON ­— Architectural renderings and floor plans were unveiled for Pierceton Elementary School at Monday’s meeting of Whitko Community School Corporation Board of Trustees.

Earlier in the year, board members and school leaders decided to move forward on two construction projects – remodeling and expansion of South Whitley Elementary School and reconstructing Pierceton Elementary School.

Woman finds transformation before New Year

COLUMBIA CITY — Traditionally, people circle Jan. 1 on their calendars as the day they will implement a healthier lifestyle.

Barb Ward, of Churubusco, has turned tradition on its head by beginning early.

Ward started working out at Anytime Fitness in September of this year, when she began Care2BFit, a health class that targets women.

Since that time, Ward is down four pants sizes and has seen other remarkable changes.

“I was getting out of breath coming up and down the stairs, it was going from bad to worse,” she said of her health before she started the class.

County hosts Shop with a Sheriff

COLUMBIA CITY — As many people are wrapping up their Christmas shopping this week, Whitley County’s Sheriff’s Department lent a helping hand to local children.

Eighteen children spent the evening with WCSD staff, first having dinner at the Whitley County Government Center, before heading to Walmart to go shopping.

Each child received a $100 gift card to spend on toys, clothing and other necessities.

Children were chosen by guidance counselors from all three Whitley County school districts.

The event was coordinated by Tim Johnson, of the WCSD reserves.

Schools to conduct another survey

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County Consolidated Schools officials are seeking input from the community on the long-term plans for the district.

In September, officials conducted an online and telephone survey in reference to the possibility of a new high school.

“For several years, the school district’s long-range planning committee has considered options for replacing the current Columbia City High School,” WCCS Superintendent Pat O’Connor said.

WCCF awards $196K in grants

COLUMBIA CITY — Several county nonprofit organizations and groups benefited from the Whitley County Community Foundation’s (WCCF) most recent funding session.

The announcement of those receiving the awards comes with one particular sizeable grant of $150,000 to the Whitley County YMCA.

Recently, YMCA officials announced that planning would begin for expanding the current Columbia City location in order to house its full-day childcare center.

The Early Learning Center has been operating out of New Hope Wesleyan Church since it took on the initiative almost two years ago.
