Northridge defeats Columbia City

MIDDLEBURY— Northridge’s girls basketball team used a big first half lead to defeat Columbia City Friday.

The Lady Raiders won by a final margin of 62-32.

The game was the first in pool play for both teams in Northridge’s Tournament.

Columbia City (7-5) will take on Andrean tomorrow morning in the tournament.

Lady Eagle Head Coach Amy Shearer said a lack of effort from her team allowed too many easy baskets for Northridge.

Eagles drop two tourney games

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s boys basketball team is off to a struggling start in the squad’s holiday tournament.

The Eagles hosted the opening day of the Carroll Shootout, but home-court advantage wasn’t enough for Columbia City, as the team fell 57-41 to Mooresville in the opening game at noon, and 62-30 to Munster in the late game Friday.

Columbia City’s Justin Bachelder led the Eagles against Mooresville with 11 points.

Election registration to begin soon

COLUMBIA CITY — With the local elections of 2014 around the corner, individuals seeking to run for office will have the chance soon to make their candidacy official.

Whitley County’s Clerk of Courts office will accept candidate filings beginning Jan. 8, 2014.

The registration window closes 30 days later — Feb. 7, 2014.

SGCS putting finishing touches on project

CHURUBUSCO — A multi-step construction project for Smith-Green Community Schools (SGCS) is nearing its end.

Business Manager Todd Fleetwood said in November the endeavor was “98 to 99 percent complete.”

Fleetwood said more than 50 percent of the $4,775,100 project was dedicated to energy efficiency.

Adams charged with probation violation

COLUMBIA CITY — A man who was just placed on probation in September is alleged to have violated that term recently.

Anthony A. Adams, 35, of Churubusco, was sentenced in 2009 to serve 16 years for dealing in methamphetamine and other drug charges.

He was sentenced to the Indiana Department of Corrections in 2009. His sentence was modified in 2012 to the Whitley County Jail.

In September, based on a good report from the work release facility, he was placed on probation.

Lady Eagles suffer close losses

COLUMBIA CITY — The 7-4 record may not show it, but Columbia City’s girls basketball team could easily be undefeated this season.

Three of the Lady Eagles’ losses have been by five points or less, and the fourth loss was in overtime by seven points.

Glass-half-empty critics may view the losses as a weakness of the team, not able to come out on top of close games, but statistics shine a different light on the team’s effort.

SGCS announces next year’s calendar

CHURUBUSCO — Smith-Green Community Schools (SGCS) began finalizing its calendar for next year at a meeting this month.

At the December meeting of the Board of Trustees, the calendar had its first reading.

School will begin Aug. 14, 2014. The winter break will be from Dec. 20 to Jan. 5, 2015.

Coach Zorger headed to Hall of Fame

NEW CASTLE — Columbia City Assistant Girls Varsity Head Coach Jenny (Eckert) Zorger was recently selected for top basketball honors.

Zorger, who has been an assistant coach under Head Coach Amy Shearer for the past four years, was a Huntington North stand-out, still holding several records for the school, and continued her career at Ball State University.

The Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Board of Directors recently announced the selected inductees for 2014, which includes Zorger.

Bond revoked in local meth case

COLUMBIA CITY — A woman accused of dealing drugs in Whitley County had her bond revoked Monday.

Braidon M. Hall, 19, was charged in June with manufacturing methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, possession of chemicals with intent to manufacture, possession of paraphernalia and maintaining a common nuisance.

She was arrested in a traffic stop made by Columbia City Police Captain Tony Hively.
