Virgil Lewis Ferrell, 72, of New Haven, formerly of Columbia City, passed away at 5:05 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at New Haven Care, New Haven.
Born Sept. 12, 1940, in Columbia City, he was the son of Wilbert L. and Henrietta (Boschet) Ferrell.
He attended Columbia City High School. Virgil spent most of his life in Whitley and Allen County and was a dedicated employee of South Side Gardens, Fort Wayne for 24 years.
Virgil will be lovingly remembered by his sister Bessie (Erville “Duke”) Callison and many nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Alta I. Acres, 81, a former resident of Columbia City, died at 2:17 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, in the North Woods Village in Kokomo.
She was born near Albion March 3, 1931, a daughter of Orson and Gladys Smith Moore. Her formative years were spent in the Rome City community and she completed her education in the Rome City High School.
WARSAW — Thursday was the sectional preliminary round for boys swimming, and Columbia City’s squad will be hitting the pool at least one more time at sectional finals Saturday.
Swimmers had to place in the top 16 overall to qualify for Saturday and had to be in the top eight to make the championship heat. The 9-16 placers swim in the consolation heat.
OSSIAN — Indian Springs Middle School’s wrestling team began its season with an undefeated record.
The Eagles faced New Haven and Norwell Wednesday night in a triple dual, topping Norwell by a decisive 72-15 score and beating New Haven by default.
The Bulldogs only brought seven grapplers.
Picking up wins against New Haven were: A.J. Chapin, Matt Wright, Seth Rosen, Jake Elkins and Jackson Wilcoxson.
COLUMBIA CITY — A South Whitley man accused of sexual misconduct with a minor has entered an alibi defense.
Timothy J. Swihart, 19, is accused of having sex on two occasions with a 14-year-old girl. His attorney, Jeff Arnold, entered an alibi defense for Swihart in Whitley County Circuit Court Monday.
A continuance was also granted, with pre-trial proceedings set to resume March 11.
Swihart was accused of having sex with the alleged victim Oct. 31 and Nov. 22.
Columbia City High School’s Science Olympiad team recently finished its season at the regional competition at Goshen College. The team competed in 23 different events and placed fifth overall.

PIERCETON — Whitko Community School Corporation is delivering improved education to students in need of special attention.
Donna Lehman, director of Special Services at WCSC, knows students experience a better future when given every chance to succeed in school.
“I want our students to be able to move forward confidently,” said Lehman. “I want them to be able to contribute to our community.”
Columbia City’s Police Department expressed its gratitude to an Allen County family this week.
The Wentland family found CCPD K9 Stryker, who went missing for nearly 24 hours in January after he got out of his kennel, approximately eight miles away.

Ned S. Byall, 84, of Columbia City, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013.
Born in Whitley County, Ned graduated from Jefferson Center School. He served in the U.S. Army and went to Radio School in Fort Benning, Ga. He was with the 1st Cavalry Ski Patrol during the Korean War and was stationed in Hokkaido, Japan.
Ned, along with his wife, Delores, operated the family farm with the help of their son, Brent. He was a member of Grace Point Church of the Nazarene, Fort Wayne.
