SERVICE A PRIVILEGE: Loft named The Center’s outstanding volunteer

May 13, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — Chris Loft, 28, is a body mechanic by day and a youth mentor by night.

He doesn’t view himself as anything extraordinary, but to The Center for Whitley County Youth, Loft is an outstanding volunteer.

At the annual benefit cook-off for The Center, Loft was awarded one of the Volunteer of the Year Awards.

“I am at The Center almost every day,” Loft said. “I have the luxury of working a job that allows me to be there shortly after school to volunteer. I don’t see it as an obligation, but a privilege to invest in the lives of these students.”

WHITLEY COUNTY — More information is coming forward about the man who was found dead in a wooded area Wednesday.

Dillon Warner, 22, was identified Friday as the body found by a property owner in eastern Whitley County.

Warner, a convicted drug felon, may still have been alive had his court hearing last month had a different outcome.

The Allen County judge spared Warner prison time — which may have been more of a death sentence.

HANDGUNS: To carry? Or not to carry?

May 13, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — For some, carrying a handgun is a way of life, for others, its purely recreational.

Regardless of the reason for registering for a handgun permit, police warn citizens to plan and prepare before they carry.

In Indiana, people aren’t required to complete handgun training before receiving their permits.

In fact, citizens don’t have to take a test regarding the laws of concealed or open carry.

So when can — and can’t — you carry?

Without a license, the options are limited.
