Indian Springs Middle School’s eighth graders took a trip to Columbia City’s Water Pollution Control Facility, the city’s wastewater treatment plant, Wednesday afternoon.

GUILTY: S. Whitley man admits sexual misconduct

COLUMBIA CITY — Less than a week short of a jury trial, a South Whitley man admitted his guilt in a sex case with a minor.

Timothy J. Swihart, 19, pled guilty to sexual misconduct with a minor, a Class C felony, last week.

As part of a plea arrangement, Swihart will receive a six-year sentence with a cap on time served being four years.

A second part of the agreement is to have two counts of perjury against Swihart dismissed.

Swihart was arrested in January. The victim in the case, a 14-year-old girl, had visited a school counselor, fearing being pregnant.

Eagle golf drops close match to DeKalb

AUBURN — Columbia City’s golf team fell in a tight Northeast Hoosier Conference match Tuesday at Bridgewater West.

The Eagles fell by four strokes, 165-169 to DeKalb.

The Barons’ top linkster, Spencer Shoemaker, paced the match by scoring a 36, one over par.

Columbia City’s Tyler Green scored a 39, and Spencer Klimek finished with a 40.

Whitko wins TRC game

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s baseball team won a 10-2 contest over Three Rivers Conference foe Rochester Wednesday night in South Whitley.

Ethan Nicodemus led the Wildcats from both the mound and the plate in the win.

Nicodemus struck out six, while only giving up one earned run and four hits.

From the plate, he batted 4-for-4, with four RBIs, two runs and a stolen base.

Nicodemus began his tear in the first inning, when he batted in teammate Alex Stoddard to take a 1-0 lead.

ROAD CLOSED

(May 16, 2013) — The Whitley County Sheriff's Department announced that County Road 550 East north of County Road 500 North will be closed today for a culvert replacement. Road should be back open by 2:30 p.m. today.

Col. City wins county rivalry

COLUMBIA CITY — It was the battle of the Lady Eagles at Morsches Park Wednesday night, as Columbia City’s softball team hosted Churubusco for a county-rivalry game.

Columbia City came out on top with a 6-1 win.

Allie Vodde knocked her second home run in two games for Columbia City.
The hosts picked up their first run in the second inning, and tacked on three more in the third.

Columbia City scored its final runs in the fourth frame to take a 6-0 lead.

Shirley Murphy, 78

Shirley Ann Murphy, 78, of Columbia City passed away at 9:34 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at Miller’s Merry Manor Inc., Columbia City. Born March 23, 1935, in Muncie, she was the daughter of Clarence and Elizabeth (Doth) Tucker.

Col. City netters fall short

WARSAW — While Wednesday night’s sectional opener at Warsaw didn’t go quite the way Columbia City’s tennis team wanted, several Lady Eagle netters are still alive in tournament play.

As a team, Columbia City fell in a heart-breaking, 3-2, match against the Lady Tigers.

“They just fell short,” Lady Eagle Head Tennis Coach Kathleen Myers said.

Columbia City picked up wins in No. 1 singles and doubles, but dropped the other matches in the 3-2 score.

The bad news — Columbia City’s season is over. The good news — No. 1 singles and doubles netters are advancing to regionals.

The memorial service for L.M. “Lee” Kilgore, 97, who died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, has been set for 4 p.m. Sunday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, with a reception following at Smith & Sons Coach Room. Preferred memorials are to Community Bible Church.
