GARBAGE PICKUP: Local ties not enough for trash contract

CHURUBUSCO — Bids for trash contracts were discussed in a special meeting of the Churubusco Town Council last night.

Four bids were submitted to the council and were opened for the initial review at the last council meeting.

Among the four bidders was current contract holder National Serv-All and Whitley Environmental, current recycling contractor for the county.

Only Steve Smith, of Whitley Environmental, was present for the special meeting.

Each proposal included a three-year and a five-year option. However, Whitley Environmental offered a third choice.

VOGELY'S VACANCY: Spencer named new WCSD detective

COLUMBIA CITY — With the recent conviction of former Whitley County Sheriff’s Detective Chuck Vogely for operating while intoxicated, some changes have been made in the department.

Second-shift Sergeant Jason Spencer is taking over Vogely’s position as detective.

On April 13, Vogely was arrested for drunk driving, and the sheriff’s department has made a decision on the future of his career.

Vogely pleaded guilty to OWI April 15, and WCSD Chief Deputy Marc Gatton said after the court proceedings, disciplinary actions moved forward by the department.
