SGCS names new Athletic Director

Smith-Green Community Schools Board of School Trustees named a new athletic director, beginning in the 2013-14 school year.

Jeremy Dexter, currently at Eastern High School in Greentown, will take the reins as athletic and extra curricular director at SGCS effective Aug. 1.

Dexter will make his way to Churubusco following his tenure as assistant athletic director, girls basketball coach and social studies teacher at Eastern High School

Indy officer in '10 fatal crash moved to Allen Co.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A suspended Indianapolis police officer facing reckless homicide and other charges for a 2010 crash that killed a motorcyclist and injured two others has been moved to a jail in Fort Wayne.

Officer David Bisard was moved Monday to the Allen County Jail from the Marion County Jail in Indianapolis. He's due to go before an Allen County judge Thursday for a bond revocation hearing following a recent drunken driving arrest in Indianapolis.

Women gets maximum term in NE Ind. police shooting

AUBURN (AP) — A judge sentenced a woman to 38 years in prison Monday for her guilty plea in connection with her boyfriend's shooting of a northeastern Indiana deputy town marshal.

DeKalb Superior Court Judge Monte Brown sentenced Julie King, 34, of Auburn to 45 years in prison with seven years suspended — the maximum sentence allowed under terms of a plea agreement. King pleaded guilty to a charge of aiding in attempted murder, and prosecutors agreed to drop charges of felony murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Man whose body found in river in Fort Wayne IDed

FORT WAYNE(AP) — A Fort Wayne man who drowned in the St. Joseph River in that city has been identified.

Allen County Coroner's Office and police reports say the body of 58-year-old Jeffery Bultemeier was found in the river at Shoaff Park on Sunday.

Bultemeier's family reported him missing early last week, and his car was found by a boat ramp at Shoaff Park.

Police said Sunday that foul play was not suspected.

An area newspaper reported Monday that the death remains under investigation by police, coroners and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Whitko’s junior varsity softball team was handed its first loss of the season Saturday at Morsches Park.

The Lady ’Cats split a double-header with Columbia City, dropping their record to 12-1.

Col. City JV golf takes sixth at invite

NEW HAVEN — In a field of 11, Columbia City’s junior varsity golf team placed sixth at the New Haven JV invitational Saturday.

The Eagles were paced by Matt Benedict, who finished the day with 85 strokes.

Benedict scored a 39 in the front nine at Whispering Creek, and fnished the back nine with a 46. Out of 18 holes, Benedict tallied seven pars and two birdies.

Also scoring under 100 for Columbia City was Tanner Daniel, who finished the day with a 92. Daniel scored a 45 on the front nine, and shot a 47 in the last nine holes.

Lady Eagles fall to Blackhawk Christian

FORT WAYNE — Churubusco’s girls tennis team dropped a Friday evening contest at Blackhawk Christian.

The Lady Eagle netters lost 4-1. The lone win for ‘Busco was at No. 3 singles, where Kayleen Mitchell beat Chloe Taner in straight sets.

Churubusco’s No. 1 doubles pair of Madi Cook and Camille Cseri took the first set in their match against Kayla Stewart and Larissa Clark, but ended up falling in three.

In No. 1 and No. 2 singles, ‘Busco’s Cheyenne Connor and Audrey Gierschner respectively lost to their opponents, Morgan Bemisderfer and Rebecca Kanpol, in straight sets.

Lady ’Cats place fifth at Goshen

GOSHEN — Whitko’s girls track team placed fifth at the Goshen Relays Saturday.

Fairfield won the close meet, where less than 15 points separated the top three teams (Plymouth, Bremen).

Though the Lady Wildcats didn’t have any first-place finishes, they took second in several events.

The 800-meter relay team of Taylor Zwick, Elaine Warner, Llyssa Bennett and Josie Sparks came in second with a time of 1:58.11.

The distance medley relay team of Michelle Kelsey, Holly Frantz, Miranda Terril and Brigit Nemitz also placed second.

Friendly squirrel

A black fox squirrel appeared on Columbia Street, South Whitley, and was rather friendly. A few residents were not fearful of holding them.

Drew Christman, pictured, and his stepfather, Jim Hixson, were holding the squirrels Sunday in their backyard which captured the attention of neighbors.

PBS Kids GO! awards writers

FORT WAYNE — Three Columbia City students were named winners for the 2013 edition of the PBS Kids GO! Young Writers Contest for the Fort Wayne Region.

In the first-grade category, Amelia Porter, of Columbia City, took third place for her submission entitled, “Jonathan’s Pancake Party.”

Taking second place in the in the second-grade category was “Rosabell’s Orphanage Surprise,” written by McKayla Adair, of Columbia City.

In the third-grade category, Emily Mullett, of Columbia City, took second place for her story, “The Sleepover.”
