STRIKE A POSE: Photo feature to document life in Whitley County

WHITLEY COUNTY — Whitley County residents are excited for the chance to see their photographs published in a special July publication.

The official start of summer and the longest day of the year is Friday.

To commemorate this unique day, The Post & Mail will publish, “A Day In The Life of Whitley County,” a special publication documenting the activities of Whitley County residents on the longest day of the year.

This is an open invitation to photography enthusiasts, as well as shutterbugs of all types.

Garden walk set for Saturday

Whitley County Master Gardners’ annual garden walk will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Until Friday, tickets will be $7 each and can be purchased from: a Master Gardener, Purdue Extension – Whitley County Office, Jones Greenhouse in Churubusco, Hartman’s Lawn & Garden in South Whitley, Portside Pizza at Tri-Lakes, or Saturday at any of the gardens.

Amateur radio field day planned for Saturday

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County Amateur Radio Field Day will begin Saturday at 2 p.m. and last until Sunday at 2 p.m.

The event is being presented by the Whitley County Amateur Radio Club.
This year, the event will be located at the Copsgear building at 3065 W. U.S. 30, Columbia City. This is a 24 hour event.

The public is invited to come ask questions about amateur radio and see what operators do. They can even help make contacts over the air or send a message to loved ones and friends.

This local event is part of the Amateur Radio Relay League Field Day held across North America.

Finishing touches

Crews are putting the finishing touches on the remodeling of the Towne & Country sign near U.S. 30 in Columbia City this week.

Workers expect the sign to be completed early next week.

Passages receives $50k

COLUMBIA CITY — With a capital campaign that exceeded its goal, Passages, Inc. continues to further its mission to be a leader in providing quality and innovative programs and services for individuals with an intellectual disability.

The goal of the capital campaign was to raise $750,000 with $782,500 raised.

The capital campaign raised funds to remodel the former Parkview Health owned Lehmberg Medical Office Building in Columbia City.

Mizpah Shrine Horse show opens Friday

COLUMBIA CITY — It is the time of year once more for horse shows in Whitley County.

The Mizpah Shrine Charity Horse Show will begin its events Friday.

Ticket gates will open at 4 p.m. Friday and at 6 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

There will be live music Friday and Saturday nights at 6 p.m., with “Renegade” taking the stage Friday and “Guild of Rock” Saturday. There will also be a Wild West Review both nights at 6 p.m.

Food and refreshments will be available rain or shine.

The show will benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Turtle Days begins

June 20, 2013

Wednesday night was the official start of the 2013 Turtle Days in Churubusco, which will run until Saturday.

Following the Opening Ceremony on the entertainment stage, Astella Fisher, 8, started off the Junior Karaoke Competition with her rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.

Turtle Days resumes tonight with food, vendors and rides opening at 6 p.m.

ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION: T.R.O.Y. Center touts successful year

COLUMBIA CITY — Alternative education is alive and well in Whitley County.

Whitley County’s Commissioners heard a report from Nikki Trier, who is the administrator at the T.R.O.Y. Center, an alternative-education school for students throughout the county and beyond.

Work at the T.R.O.Y. Center is based on partnerships. Trier said working with Whitley County Community Corrections is one such alliance that is mutually beneficial.
