Jeff Hinen won the Saturday night feature.
COLUMBIA CITY â Whitley Countyâs 4-H Fair was more than just a project for Justin Hinen, it was a lifestyle.
Hinen passed away at age 21 after a snowmobile accident in March, but his presence still carries on at this yearâs fair.
At Saturday nightâs demolition derby, a moment of silence was held for Hinen, and many of the derby cars had a sticker with his nickname, âSkinnyâ and the number 7 (Hinenâs derby number).
âThe demolition derby is a big deal in our family,â Justinâs brother Jeremy said. âMy brother and I grew up with it. 4-H and derbys are all we knew.â
COLUMBIA CITY â It doesnât seem plausible that a small, rural community such as Larwill, would be rocked with news of a horrific crime to a teenage girl.
However, the recent guilty plea made by Dean Pressler for child molesting, child seduction and sexual misconduct have some residents reconsidering the safety of their families.
According to law enforcement case reports, the victim, who was 12 years old at the time she met Pressler, was made a âprisonerâ in her own home.
COLUMBIA CITY â A local financial institution is hoping to take a leap into the future.
For STAR Financial Bank, though, the jump forward in time will be connected to aesthetics.
Renovations are scheduled for this fall at the downtown banking location, 102 W. Van Buren St., Columbia City.
âThe downtown office we have was built in the early 1960s,â said David Smith, market president for STAR. âThereâs a little age to the building in general, and a little obsolescence.â
The renovation will take nearly nine months to complete. It will have a price tag just shy of $2 million.
CHURUBUSCO â Angie Sievers took the term âsuper-momâ to a new level early Monday morning.
Sievers was in her home, reading a book at approximately 12:15 a.m. Monday when she saw flames coming out of the back of her home.
She quickly got her husband and two young children out of the house, located at 6452 E. Edgewood Dr., near Churubusco, and called the fire department.
Though the home suffered considerable damage, Keith Sievers, Angieâs husband, is thankful for his wife.
The National Weather Service for Northern Indiana is calling for heat indices this week starting in the mid 90s and approaching 100 degrees by week's end.
