James Campbell Sr., 72

July 3, 2013

James C. Campbell Sr., age 72, of Big Lake, passed away at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 1, 2013, at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne.
Born Oct. 30, 1940, at his home in Noble County, he was the son of Claude W. Campbell and Betty (Gibson) Campbell.
He graduated from Indiana State School for the Deaf. On April 3, 1964, he married Barbara Sherman at Merriam Christian Chapel.
He was a machine operator for Viking Inc. for almost 40 years and retired in 2005. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed tying flies and drinking coffee at Goss Grocery with his friends.

Beatrice Linvill, 98

Beatrice V. Linvill, 98, a lifelong resident of Whitley County, died at 7:05 p.m. Monday, July 1, 2013, at Parkview Oaks where she had been a resident since June 11.
She was born Sept. 6, 1914, in Jefferson Township, a daughter of Earl S. and Laura E. (Lower) Kaufman.
She graduated from Jefferson Center High School and was the last living member of the Class of 1932.
On June 12, 1938, she was united in marriage to Lawrence F. Linvill. They made their home in Smith Township. Mr. Linvill died April 1, 1972. In 2000, Beatrice moved into Columbia City.

Clayton Grizzle, 18

Clayton Lee Grizzle, 18, of North Manchester, died at 7:08 p.m., Sunday, June 30, 2013, in North Manchester as a result of a tragic car accident.
He was born January 25, 1995, in Wabash to Daniel Clayton and Roberta Lee (Craig) Grizzle.
Clayton was a 2013 graduate of Manchester High School and was planning to attend Universal Technical Institute (UTI) in Chicago in August. He worked at McGuin’s Clean Cut Lawn Maintenence in Huntington.

Willodean Hines, 88

July 3, 2013

Willodean Grawcock Hines, 88, a resident of Fort Wayne and a native of Churubusco, passed away at 12:45 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at Miller’s Merry Manor in Syracuse. She had been in failing health since May and had entered the nursing home Saturday.
Willodean was born on Aug. 17, 1924, in Churubusco, a daughter of Leslie and Mary Agnes (Spacy) Grawcock.
She spent her formative years there and graduated from Churubusco High School in 1941.

Delores Haggenjos, 94

July 3, 2013

Delores C. Haggenjos, 94, passed away Monday, July 1, 2013, at home surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Fort Wayne, Delores was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, the Rosary Sodality and Daughters of Isabell.
She enjoyed playing cards, reading and spending time with family.

RATES ON THE RISE: Tax funds rising in Whitley County

COLUMBIA CITY — Residents of Whitley County, particularly Columbia City, will see a rise in some of their taxes in the coming year.

Whitley County’s Council approved the reestablishment of the county’s Cumulative Capital Fund for the coming year. The near-doubling of the rate will amount to approximately $30 per $100,000 of assessed value. The council enacted this increase to pay for bridge work around the county.

Little league champs

Churubusco’s Senior League baseball team won the Little League District 10 Invitational Tournament 2-0 against Hamilton Park (who had only lost two games all season before the championship).

The team was undefeated in the tournament.

It began the season 3-8 but won 17 of the 18 games, including the tournament.

Walker gives mural a touch up

COLUMBIA CITY — Since 1935, attendees at the brick church located at the corner of Washington and Jackson Streets, Columbia City, have faced a large, three-paneled mural during worship.

The artist’s name, Fullerton, and the year, 1935, are in the lower right-hand corner of the mural, which measures approximately 18 feet by 18 feet.

In 1935, the First Church of God worshipped in the building.

Don Culbertson was 12 years old in 1935, and remembers the night the mural was revealed.

DAY IN THE LIFE: Photo submission deadline tomorrow

WHITLEY COUNTY — It is not too late to submit photos depicting how Whitley County residents spent the longest day of the year, June 21.

Photos taken on this particular day can be submitted for a special photo documentary publication “A Day in the Life of Whitley County” that The Post & Mail will publish later this month.

New pastor welcomed at First Church

First Church of God, Columbia City, recently welcomed a new worship pastor to its congregation.

Holly Parks will officially have her first Sunday in her new position this week.
