SDI FATALITY: Jeffery A. Flory dies in industrial accident

COLUMBIA CITY – A Noble County man perished in a fatal industrial accident at Steel Dynamics Inc. late Monday evening.

According to the Whitley County Coroner’s Office of F. Randall Dellinger, the deceased victim was identified as Jeffery A. Flory, age 44, of Albion.

The accident happened Monday night at approximately 10:30 p.m. at the Whitley County complex of Steel Dynamics Inc., located at 2800 S. 800 E, east of Columbia City.

The complete cause and manner of death is to be determined pending an autopsy, noted the office of the coroner. The investigation is continuing.

Hannah Reid, of Columbia City, swam this past weekend in the Fort Wayne City Championships Swim Meet at Helen P. Brown Natatorium.

She took first place in the 11-12 girls age group.

She placed first in the 50-yard free, first in the 100-yard individual medley, and third in the 50 butterfly.

She swam for Summer Swim Club at Arlington Park in Fort Wayne this summer.

DOUBLE DUTY: Deputies’ insurance coverage debated

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County Sheriff Deputies have the opportunity to bank extra hours serving for other municipalities such as South Whitley and Churubusco.

However, should that officer get injured while serving in these other areas, who is liable for the cost?

This question was posed by County Commissioners at a meeting Tuesday when Sheriff Mark Hodges approached the leaders with the scenario.

IN THE BUDGET?: SGCS considers resource officer

CHURUBUSCO — Smith-Green Community Schools reviewed the importance of School Resource Officers (SRO) at Monday’s business meeting.

Last year was the first time the district had an SRO in the building.

Churubusco Police Officer Chad Fulkerson worked for the district in that capacity last year. While noting the importance of the SRO position, Superintendent Galen Mast said the district was in a tight place regarding funding.

The district has applied for a matching grant that will fund the SRO for the building, Mast explained.

PRESSLER SENTENCED TO 60 YEARS: ‘He should not have the chance to do this to another person’

COLUMBIA CITY — “In summary, you are a despicable human being, and there is nothing good to say about you.”

Following these words, Whitley County Circuit Court Judge James Heuer sentenced Dean Pressler Monday to 60 years in the Indiana Department of Corrections for child molesting, sexual misconduct with a minor and child seduction.

Raffle winner

Columbia City High School’s Choir Parent Organization sold raffle tickets during Old Settlers Days in June.

The winner of the raffle was Dan Behm (right). He is pictured with choir parent Joel Vorndran. Behm won $2,000, but donated $200 back to the show choir’s scholarship fund.

He purchased the winning ticket for $5 from Ace Hardware in Columbia CIty.

MUELLER TO PRISON FOR THEFT: Former Thorncreek Township man stole from parents’ fund

CLAYTON, Mo. — A former Thorncreek Township man was sentenced to five years in the Missouri Department of Corrections July 17 for failure to make restitution of stolen trust monies.

Larry Mueller, 63, was arrested last October for stealing approximately $100,000 from his parents’ trust fund.

His parents are Christian and Juanita Mueller, former Thorncreek Township residents. According to one of their children, Christian was a Thorncreek fire chief for 12 years.

Churubusco man dies in crash on Ind. 205

LAOTTO — A Churubusco man died in a car crash in LaOtto Saturday.

Thomas Schultis, 73, was traveling east on Ind. 205 when law enforcement officials say he crossed the center line and was struck by a west-bound truck.

Schultis died at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle was flown to a hospital for treatment for a leg injury.

No citations have been issued, but officers indicate the crash remains under investigation.
