Prepping for school dance

Rotarians hear from area bomb squad member

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City Rotarians learned of explosions from the perspective of Fort Wayne Indiana Region III Bomb Squad Commander Sergeant Greg Stier.

“To blow up is the only thing an explosive device wants to do,” said Stier. “We encourage that too, but we want it to blow up on our terms.”
According to Stier, this is the simple goal of a person assigned to the bomb squad at the Fort Wayne police department.

“The physics of an explosive device are simple,” Stier said.
“It just wants to react the only way it knows to react. Controlling that reaction is the key element.

Delta Theta holds meeting for a final time

COLUMBIA CITY — The final meeting of the Columbia City Beta Upsilon Chapter of Delta Theta Tau Sorority was held at the home of Janelle Smith Dec. 2, 2013.

The remaining six members feasted their traditional cranberry pinwheels and cheeseballs along with homemade eggnog for the hors d’oeuvres.
The meal included celery salad, crown roast, sun dried tomatoes in steamed broccoli and herb roasted potatoes.

The members also enjoyed the traditional homemade cinnamon bread, a Smith specialty. Berry swirl cheesecake and peppermint bark chocolate completed the dinner.

SLICK ROAD CONDITIONS

(Dec. 11, 2013) — Whitley County Emergency Management reported that roadways are slick and snow covered. Officials urge drivers to be careful when traveling and adjust vehicle speed as necessary. More snow is expected throughout the day and into the evening hours.

Janet Hinen’s class at Little Turtle Elementary School showcased idioms for students and parents Tuesday. Each child chose an idiom to act out or to create a costume to illustrate their chosen idiom.

Youth to raise money for church trip to Haiti

COLUMBIA CITY — Teenagers from Columbia City United Methodist Church will be raising funds to cover the expense of a missions trip to Haiti in 2014.
A holiday bazaar will give the youth group the opportunity to sale kettle corn and hold a raffle to financially support their cause.
Santa’s Helper’s Market will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Van Buren Event Center, 301 W. Van Buren St., in downtown Columbia City.

Dale Alles, 87

December 11, 2013

Dale N. Alles, 87, of Roanoke passed away at 3:47 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013.
He was born Oct. 17, 1926, in Whitley County, a son of Philip and Freida (Ness) Alles.
Survivors include three sons, a son-in-law, six daughters, a brother, a sister, 23 grandchildren and 21 great -grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel, 2901 Guilford St., Huntington.

Lt. Col. Robert Walker, 92

Lt. Col. Robert L. Walker, 92, of Columbia City, passed away at 8:30 p.m. Nov. 13, 2013, at his home in Columbia City.
Born Dec. 25, 1920, in Huntington, he was the son of Leslie A. and Elsie M. (Ramsey) Walker.
Raised in Huntington, Robert graduated from Huntington High School with the Class of 1938, and began working at Caswell-Runion.
On Jan. 14, 1942, he married Juanita Glenn Welches in Fort Wayne. Bob and Juanita lived in Fort Wayne until they bought a farm near Tri-Lakes in 1954, raising their family there until moving to Columbia City in 1992.

Carl Reaser, 62

Carl A. Reaser, 62, of Columbia City, passed away at 12:40 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, 2013.
Born Feb. 26, 1951, in Fort Wayne, he was the son of Ferdinand W. Reaser and Elda P. (Johnson) Price.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in September of 1968. After his training, he was sent to Da Nang Vietnam where he was wounded. After his recovery, he was stationed in South Korea and German before being discharged in September of 1974.

Larry Blue, 83

Dr. Larry Lamar Blue, 83, of Lewisville, N.C., passed away Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, at Forsyth Medical Center.
Dr. Blue was born July 31, 1930, in Fort Wayne, to Lawrence Elnathan Blue and Snelda Hoffman Blue.
Larry served his country in the U.S. Army after he finished high school. Following his military service, Larry received a bachelor’s degree in statistics from Manchester College in Indiana, a master’s degree in education from Ball State University and a doctorate in education from Indiana University where he also worked as a professor.
