Whitko falls to Eastbrook in sectional

DECATUR — Whitko’s baseball team saw its season come to an end in its sectional opener against Eastbrook Friday.

The Wildcats fell by a final score of 12-7.

Whitko dug a hole and could not get out of it. The Panthers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning and did not relinquish the advantage.

“Their leadoff guy reached on an error,” Whitko Head Baseball Coach Erik Hisner said of the first inning. “That kind of set the tone for the game.”

Columbia City netter Celine Rongos is headed to the Indiana State Finals in LaPorte next week after winning her No. 1 singles match in the semistate at Culver Academies Saturday.

Rongos topped Morgan Smith, of Bremen, by a 6-4, 6-3 score. Smith was undefeated until she met Rongos. Last year, Smith made a run in the individual state tournament.

“I am very pleased with how Celine played tonight,” Columbia City Head Coach Kathleen Myers said.

“She dug deep and came out with a win. Her hard work in the off-season is paying off.”

Rained out: Sectional games rescheduled

FORT WAYNE — Sectional games for both Columbia City’s and Churubusco’s baseball teams have been postponed.

Both Eagle teams were originally scheduled to play Monday, but were unable to get their games in due to rainy weather.

Columbia City’s game has been rescheduled for today at 6:30 p.m. at Carroll High School.

As before, the Eagles will play Snider in the semifinals.

Churubusco’s sectional semifinal game against Adams Central has been rescheduled for today at 7:30 p.m. at Indiana Tech.

Remembering the fallen

Though Monday’s Memorial Day parades in Columbia City and South Whitley were called off due to rain, a special service was held at the American Legion in Columbia City to honor fallen veterans.

Joyce Gaff, 90

May 27, 2013

Joyce N. Gaff, 90, of Columbia City, passed away at 9:46 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2013, at Parkview Whitley Hospital.
Born Aug. 4, 1922, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, she was the daughter of Nathaniel C. and Lillian A. (George) Newman.
She lived in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and then moved to Churubusco in 1944, and then to Florida in 1987.
In May 2006, she moved to her present home in Columbia City. She graduated from Patterson Collegiate Institute with a Senior Matriculation in Windsor in 1941.

Stephen Jantz, 62

Steven P. Jantz, 62, a resident of Churubusco, passed away at 5:16 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2013, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne. He had been seriously ill for the past week.
Mr. Jantz was born Oct. 10, 1950, in Fort Wayne, a son of John “Jake” and Mary (Tumbleson) Jantz. He spent his formative years there and graduated from Northside High School in 1969.
On June 4, 1977, he was married in Churubusco to Nanette K. Anderson, and lived all of his adult life in Churubusco.

Simon Luther, 94

Simon L. Luther, 94, of Columbia City, died at 11:33 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2013, at Parkview Whitley Hospital where he was admitted Wednesday.
He was born Sept. 4, 1918, in Washington Township, a son of Walter and Vera (Sheets) Luther. His formative years were spent in Washington Township. He graduated from Washington Center High School.
On Sept. 21, 1940, he was united in marriage to Betty L. Gradeless. They made their home in Columbia City for four years before moving to Laud. In September 2005 they returned to Columbia City.

Free clinic set for relocation

COLUMBIA CITY ­— After moving from its original location in Wolf Lake at Luckey Hospital to the Wolf Lake United Methodist Church, the Free Health Clinic is set to relocate again.

The clinic will be moving in June to an office at 524 Branch Ct., Columbia City, across from Ace Hardware. It will be open Thursday, June 27 with hours of operation from 1 to 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday of each month.

Whitko students applauded for school success

PIERCETON — Whitko Community School Corporation recently recognized those students named as Student of the Month for May at the May school board meeting.

Each student received a certificate to commemorate their achievement.

Seth Russell is a second grader at Pierceton Elementary School and was nominated by Heather Fox.

COLUMBIA CITY — After 32 years of teaching preschool at Grace Lutheran Church, Columbia City, Linda Trowbridge retired May 16.

A special coffee hour was planned in her honor after church May 19.

Q: Have you always lived in Whitley County?
A:
“We’ve lived here for 43 years. We raised our family here.”

Q: How did you get started at the preschool?
A:
“I helped at Thorncreek Nursery School when my daughters were in preschool. I then took classes at IPFW and started the program at Grace.”
