SOUTH WHITLEY â At 64, Bruce Hansen is ready to slow down, finally.
At the end of the 2012-13 school year, Hansen will step down from his position as South Whitley Elementary Schoolâs principal.
Although the retirement will mean his four years at SWES has ended, the process of leaving education is not a new one for Hansen.
In 2008, Hansen retired from a principal position in Washington before moving to Indiana.
âI needed something to do so I started substituting teaching,â Hansen said. âI came here and before I knew it, I had been here for four years.â
LIGONIER â Churubuscoâs softball team fell to West Noble Friday night in Ligonier.
The Chargers beat the Lady Eagles by a final score of 4-0.
West Noble built a 2-0 lead after the third inning and added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth frame to take the win over the Lady Eagles.
Churubusco is now 5-10 on the year and the Chargersâ campaign mark is 4-10.
âBusco is slated to play again Monday at home against Leo.
COLUMBIA CITY â Columbia Cityâs softball team left the diamond at Morsches Park with a sour taste in its mouth, after suffering a difficult loss to Snider Friday, 6-5.
The Lady Eagles battled back from a 4-0 deficit in the first inning to get within one run of tying the game. Larissa Rehrer stepped up to the plate with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning and knocked a double to right field, sending home a runner on second base to tie the score â or not.
COLUMBIA CITY â Mary Raber Elementary School leaders want to help their students learn, and, according to administrators, it starts with the teachers.
Julie Turpin, principal at Mary Raber, said the teamwork and collaboration from her staff are the keys to student success.
âOur extraordinary people make the difference,â she said.
Turpin had the opportunity to tout some of the successes of MRES at the last meeting of the Whitley County Consolidated Schools (WCCS) Board of School Trustees.
FORT WAYNE â Whatever fire was in the Columbia City baseball team had gone out Friday night as the Eagles lost to the Bishop Luers Knights 4-2 at Indiana Tech.
Despite out-hitting Bishop Luers 4-3, Columbia City couldnât put runs on the board. The Eaglesâ defense didnât help their cause, as they committed six errors in the field.
COLUMBIA CITY â Youth will be served â a common expression that describes the relationship between the Columbia City Electric Department and a graphic arts class at Columbia City High School.
The city began a contest within the graphic arts class at the high school, taught by Chad Moore, to design a new logo for the electric department. The winning design will go on letterhead and be on the door of a new vehicle for the department.
Anthony L. âTonyâ Leedy, 59, a native of Etna Troy Township, passed away peacefully among family and friends, May 1, 2013, at Hospice by the Sea in Boca Raton, Fla.
A beloved son of Kenneth R. Leedy and Lona M. (Gaff) Leedy, he was born Nov. 6, 1953, in Wolf Lake.
He attended school at Etna-Troy Grade School, Columbia City High School and Ball State University, where he was a brother of the fraternity Lambda Chi Alpha.
SOUTH WHITLEY â Whitkoâs girls tennis team had two Three Rivers Conference matches this week and split the pair.
Monday, the Lady Wildcats defeated visiting Southwood, 3-2. At No. 1 singles, Laura Hippensteel pulled out a tight three-set win over Southwoodâs Sarah Peters in a match that was more than two hours.
At No. 2 singles, Aressa Tackwell of Whitko beat Southwoodâs Emma Flynn 6-0, 6-1.
LIGONIER â Churubuscoâs girls tennis squad dropped a road contest to a Northeast Corner Conference opponent Thursday.
It was the Chargers from West Noble that victimized the Lady Eagles. The hosts defeated visiting âBusco 4-1 in varsity action.
At No. 1 singles, Churubuscoâs Audrey Gierscher picked up the lone win for vistors at 6-3, 6-1 over Hannah Pfenning.
At No. 2 singles, Cheyenne Conner of âBusco fell to Rachel Strouse, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, Kayleen Mitchell of the Lady Eagles lost to Joise Gibbons, 6-2, 6-2.
HAMILTON â Churubuscoâs softball team defeated Northeast Corner Conference-rival Hamilton Thursday night.
The Lady Eagles were 9-1 victors in the road win.
In the circle, Courtney Luttman keyed the âBusco charge.
She pitched seven innings, allowing just one run and striking out eight and scattering eight hits.
Offensively, Elaine Horn helped lead Churubusco by going 3-for-3.
Luttman was one of two Lady Eagles to get two hits. She was 2-of-4, as was Chandler Blake. Both had one RBI as well.
Blake and Kellary Crabil both had a double with Crabil driving in two runs.
