GAS LEAK: Struck gas line evacuates local businesses

COLUMBIA CITY ­— A gas leak Thursday afternoon forced several Columbia City businesses to evacuate and temporarily shut down.

At approximately 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Columbia City’s fire department was sent to the Columbia City Plaza, located at the corner of U.S. 30 and Ind. 109, for a gas leak.

According to Fire Chief Tom LaRue, crews were boring under the pavement between two strip malls when they struck a gas line.

LaRue said it took nearly two hours to shut off the gas to the area, and several buildings were filled with natural gas.

Whitko middle schoolers finish football season

LARWILL— Whitko’s middle school football teams have finished their respective 2013 seasons.

The seventh grade team scored a win Oct. 16 against Crestview by a 28-16 score.

Spencer Sroufe scored two touchdowns and had an extra point, Collin Loe scored one touchdown and Jack Curless had one.

The eighth grade Wildcats also won Oct. 16 against Crestview 12-0. Touchdowns were scored by Hunter Reed and Chaz Stanley.

The seventh grade team ended the year at 2-7 and the eighth grade squad finished 4-5.

Green wins junior golf tournament

LEBANON, Ohio — A Columbia City High School sophomore captured a Golf Week Junior Tour (GJT) win last weekend.

Tyler Green won the tour event at Shaker Run in Lebanon, Ohio.

It took a playoff for Green to do it, as he and Spencer Dobbs both shot 152 over the two days to tie in the boys’ 15-19 division.

On the second playoff hole, though, Green nearly had a hole-in-one. His tee shot landed just three feet from the cup. He finished and won the tournament on that hole.

Roush to cap off harrier career at state meet

TERRE HAUTE — A Columbia City cross country runner will step onto the course one more time Saturday.

Lady Eagle senior Samantha Roush qualified for the state meet, which will be this Saturday in Terre Haute.

She clinched the spot by placing seventh at the New Haven semi-state meet last Saturday.

This is the fourth consecutive year Roush has qualified. Her freshman year she was 16th, she came in seventh as a sophomore and was 24th last year.

The girls race will be at 1:45 p.m. at LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute. The boys race is at 1 p.m.

Ninth-ranked Eagles to take on Lions

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s football team will likely have a more difficult path to a victory in this week’s sectional semifinal.

One week after scoring a 28-13 home win against Eastside, the Eagles have to hit the road to play Class 2A 14th-ranked Bremen.

The Lions defeated Manchester 49-21 in their sectional quarterfinal game last week.

Churubusco ended the 2013 regular season ranked ninth.

For both teams, it will be a unique showdown. ’Busco enters 8-2, and Bremen 7-3, but both schools are undefeated against Class 2A competition.

Conferences produce mixed sectional results

NORTHEAST INDIANA — Postseason play in football is often used as a measuring stick.

The subject of the measuring is how different high school football conferences stack up as far as quality is concerned.

Since most conferences have very few games played out of the league, such assessing is difficult until sectionals start.

While by no means perfect, postseason play and performance is used as a gauge.

Here is a glance at how area conferences performed during week one of sectional action.

Betty Fetters, 90

Betty J. Fetters, 90, of Noble County, died at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, at her home.
She was born June 22, 1923, in Kokomo, a daughter of Harry John and Mildred Mae (Heath) Adams. She graduated from Huntington High School.
On Feb. 19, 1950, she was united in marriage to Richard L. “Rick” Fetters.
They made their home on a farm. Mr. Fetters died Feb. 22, 2010.
She was a member of Ormas Baptist Church, American Legion Post #98 Auxiliary and a charter member of Wolf Lake V.F.W. Post #4717 Auxiliary.

Delores Miller, 84

Delores J. Miller, 84, of Albion, passed away at 3:23 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne, with her family by her side.
Born July 10, 1929, in Van Wert County, Ohio, she was the daughter of Orval and Nora (Kiehl) North.
She graduated from Wren High School, Wren, Ohio, with the Class of 1947. On Aug. 17, 1947, she married Clifford L. in Ohio.
In 1969, they moved from Ohio to Noble County. She was a librarian for Central Noble School Corporation, Wolf Lake, with 33 years of service, retiring in 2004.

James Smith, 75

James E. Smith, 75, formerly of Angola, passed away Oct. 28, 2013 at his home in Sunrise Beach, Mo. 
Jim was born May 10, 1938, in LaGrange County, to Buryl and Irene Parker Smith. He was married 55 years to Barbara Stevens Smith who survives at their home.
Surviving relatives include Jeffrey A. and Suzy (Scranage) Smith of Waterloo; Scott B. and Pam K. (Myers) Smith of Middlebury, and Barry L. and Kim L. (Elliott) Smith of Avon, Ohio. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Jack E. Smith of Ashley.

Richard Bremer, 58

Rev. Richard A. Bremer, 58, of Stewardson, Ill., died at 9:24 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, in his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Trinity Lutheran Church, Stewardson, Ill. with Rev. Michael Mohr officiating.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in the church and one hour before service time on Saturday. Burial will be in Stewardson Cemetery, Stewardson, Ill.
Arrangements are made by Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Strasburg, Ill. Memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church or Trinity Lutheran School.
