SOUTH WHITLEY â Whitkoâs girls tennis team had two Three Rivers Conference matches this week and split the pair.
Monday, the Lady Wildcats defeated visiting Southwood, 3-2. At No. 1 singles, Laura Hippensteel pulled out a tight three-set win over Southwoodâs Sarah Peters in a match that was more than two hours.
At No. 2 singles, Aressa Tackwell of Whitko beat Southwoodâs Emma Flynn 6-0, 6-1.
LIGONIER â Churubuscoâs girls tennis squad dropped a road contest to a Northeast Corner Conference opponent Thursday.
It was the Chargers from West Noble that victimized the Lady Eagles. The hosts defeated visiting âBusco 4-1 in varsity action.
At No. 1 singles, Churubuscoâs Audrey Gierscher picked up the lone win for vistors at 6-3, 6-1 over Hannah Pfenning.
At No. 2 singles, Cheyenne Conner of âBusco fell to Rachel Strouse, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, Kayleen Mitchell of the Lady Eagles lost to Joise Gibbons, 6-2, 6-2.
HAMILTON â Churubuscoâs softball team defeated Northeast Corner Conference-rival Hamilton Thursday night.
The Lady Eagles were 9-1 victors in the road win.
In the circle, Courtney Luttman keyed the âBusco charge.
She pitched seven innings, allowing just one run and striking out eight and scattering eight hits.
Offensively, Elaine Horn helped lead Churubusco by going 3-for-3.
Luttman was one of two Lady Eagles to get two hits. She was 2-of-4, as was Chandler Blake. Both had one RBI as well.
Blake and Kellary Crabil both had a double with Crabil driving in two runs.
SOUTH WHITLEY â Whitkoâs junior varsity softball team is 11-0 for the season, and four of those wins came this week.
The Lady Wildcats won four straight days, Monday through Thursday, defeating Huntington North, North Miami, Central Noble and Carroll, respectively.
Monday, Whitko downed Huntington North, 15-5. Adrianna Holst struck out five while picking up the win in the circle for the Lady âCats. Whitko had six extra-base hits in the game.
COLUMBIA CITY â It was altogether fitting that on Thursdayâs senior night that the Columbia City Eagle Baseball team got standout performances from its senior leaders in the Northeast Hoosier Conference game with the visiting New Haven Bulldogs.
The Eagles used a dominating pitching performance from senior Jordan Bickle and multiple extra-base hits from seniors Derek Hinen, Andrew Biggs and Austin McCormick to hang a 14-1 loss on the Bulldogs.
Bickle turned in an outstanding game on the mound for the Eagles.
COLUMBIA CITY â Little Turtle Elementary School teachers and administrators are working every day to fulfill the buildingâs mission statement.
That statement is one the faculty hopes each student embraces, âI am here to learn.â
Learning is aided for the students by Quality Circles, which are groups of teachers who work together within specializations. Academic quality groups include such areas as literacy and math.
âAll quality circles will support the schoolâs goals,â said Little Turtle Principal Tammy Weimer.
ANDERSON â Whitkoâs baseball team traveled to Anderson Prep School Thursday night and took a decisive 14-2 win.
Tanner Gaff led the Wildcats from the mound and the plate.
Gaff pitched four innings, giving up one earned run and striking out nine. From the plate, Gaff batted 3-for-4, scoring three runs and two RBIs.
Ryan Weigold finished up on the mound for Whitko, pitching the fifth and final inning, giving up one of Andersonâs seven hits.
Weigold also batted well, going 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs.
COLUMBIA CITY â A Columbia City man who pleaded guilty last month to two meth-related charges received a 20-year sentence in Whitley County Circuit Court Monday.
Joshua Lemmon, 34, was handed a pair of 10-year sentences, to be served concurrently, with none of the time suspended. The two charges to which he admitted his guilt were dealing in methamphetamine and manufacturing methamphetamine.
In his sentencing, Whitley County Circuit Court Judge James Heuer said he would recommend Lemmon for work release and said the sentences could be modified in the future.
Little Turtle Elementary School recently named its Spirit Award recipients.
The Peabody Public Library recently announced its Teen Idol winners. Taking first place was Dakota Schilling, who sang and played the guitar.
The contest was sponsored by the Whitley County Community Foundationâs âCount Me In Program.â
