COLUMBIA CITY -- An event to launch the efforts of Whitley County's Relay for Life event, set for June, was planned for this evening. However, hazardous weather conditions have postponed the party until Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m. at Parkview Whitley Hospital.
The night will feature food and entertainment as well as information regarding the relay in June. Interested participants, team members past and present as well as survivors and caregivers are encouraged to attend.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” While the new year brought some personnel changes for many school districts in Indiana, that wasnâ€™t the case for Whitley Count Consolidated Schools.
At last weekâ€™s meeting, school board members nominated and voted Don Armstrong back in as the WCCS school board president, and also kept all other officials the same.
Tim Bloom served as vice president last year and was reelected by unanimous vote last week.
Deb Hiss wasnâ€™t present at the meeting, but was re-elected as the WCCS secretary.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” Give and take â€” that was the concept Whitley County Sheriffâ€™s Chief Deputy Marc Gatton pitched to County leaders last week.
Gatton asked County Council to give the department an additional $26,960 for the purchase of four new vehicles.
The actual cost to outfit the three cars and one SUV would be more than $100,000, but Gatton told both the County Commissioners and County Council members that the department would shoulder the financial burden to retrofit the vehicles.
Area media are reporting that shots have been fired at the campus of Purdue University in West Lafayette.
A text alert was sent to students at noon Tuesday warning them of shooting at the Electrical Engineering Building. Students were advised to remain sheltered.
A second alert was sent out at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday saying police have a person in custody. Students were still urged to remain sheltered.
WHITLEY COUNTYâ€” A trend of more baby births in Whitley County that began in 2012 continued last year.
Whitley County had 225 births as of late December in 2012, which compared to a figure of 188 in 2011.
In 2013, the increase continued, as the county health department reported a figure of 295 as of Dec. 13, 2013.
Last year, Joann Miller of the Whitley County Health Department attributed that growth to healthcare professionals at Parkview Whitley Hospital attracting patients.

The event will be scheduled, although Relay Committee members have not determined a date. The Post & Mail will have further updates as they become available.
Ind. 14, east of Ind. 9 in Whitley County was drifted drifted across the road Sunday afternoon, despite state highway trucks plowing the roads in tandem. All three Whitley County school districts were closed Monday due to many county roads being drifted shut. Cold temperatures are on the way, with sub-zero temperatures in the forecast for the second week in January.
