BUSINESS SURVIVES: Viking Products dealing with aftermath of blaze

COLUMBIA CITY — Since a massive fire destroyed a large portion of the Viking Products building, the company has weathered storms of all forms in January.

First, Winter Storm Ion blew into Whitley County, dumping 16 inches of snow on the area, Sunday, Jan. 5.

Early the next morning, with many roads still snow covered and impassable, Viking Products, a longtime Whitley County business, caught fire.

Whitley County is now under a TRAVEL WATCH ADVISORY. Only essential travel is recommended. More snow is expected to hit the area tomorrow, approximately 4 inches.

Officials advise to stay off roadways, especially outside of the city limits, where many roads are continuing to drift shut.

LOVING LEGACY: Armstrong family supports Y’s preschool program

COLUMBIA CITY — When Whitley County’s YMCA suddenly started a preschool program two years ago, it hadn’t developed plans for building on to the existing Y.

Now a $2.25 million addition is set to be erected on the east side of the YMCA that will feature classrooms, a kitchen, gymnasium and natural playground for children from six weeks old to the age of five.

“I don’t think having a program like this was really on our radar, but when the need presented itself, it made sense for us to step up,” said Erica Miller, executive director for the YMCA.

Spelling success

Coesse Elementary School recently held its Spelling Bee for grades third through fifth. This is done in association with the Scripps National Spelling Bee program. Winning for grades third and fourth were Alex Kelley and Easton Carnahan, both third grade students at CES. The students were named co-winners after going back and forth several times on their final words. Winning for the fifth graders was Brinnan More. Heidi Bolinger was runner-up for the fifth grade students.

Eagle grapplers drop final home dual

COLUMBIA CITY — Thursday night the Columbia City Eagle wrestlers played host to Northeast Hoosier Conference foe,East Noble.

In a match rescheduled due to weather, the Eagles squared off against a veteran East Noble squad that boasted four state qualifiers.

The Eagles dropped eight of the first nine matches, but finished strong with five straight wins. Despite the rally, the Eagles fell by a 39-28 score.

Sentence modified for Churubusco man

COLUMBIA CITY — A man convicted of dealing methamphetamine in 2013 received a sentence modification Monday and will now be serving the remainder of his time locally.

Benjamin L. Greer, 31, of Churubusco, was sentenced to the Indiana Department of Correction for 10 years in April of 2013. He was ordered to serve eight of those years.

At the time of his sentencing, Greer expressed a desire to take advantage of DOC programs. After a year, he desired to return to Whitley County to be on work release.

Eris J. Hoover, 81

January 24, 2014

Eris J. Hoover, 81, of Columbia City, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014.
She was born to the late Preston and Elizabeth Fisher on Nov. 21, 1932 in Richmond. She retired from Wayne University of Cosmetology where she was an instructor for several years.
She is survived by her sons, Donald Richison, Larry Richison, Russell Richison, and David Richison; daughter, Brenda Wright; 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Eris was preceded in death by her siblings, Russell, Avis, and Melba June. No services are planned. Arrangements are made by Advantage Funeral Home.

Darol Eldridge, 82

Darol R. Eldridge, 82, of Larwill, passed away at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, at his home.
Born Nov. 24, 1931, in Fort Wayne, he was the son of Dennis and Nellie (Barber) Eldridge.
He attended Central High School graduating with the Class of 1949. Darol joined the U.S. Navy serving four years as an airplane mechanic. He married Marsha (Swearingen) Ihlenfeld on July 28, 1979. They lived in Fort Wayne and Huntertown before moving to Larwill in 1983.

Beverly Whiting, 80

Beverly J. Whiting, 80, of Columbia City, passed away at 8:52 am Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at Miller’s Merry Manor in Columbia City. Born Aug. 23, 1933, in Frankfort, she was the daughter of Lester G. and Helen Lewellyn.
She graduated from Knox High School and Sept. 15, 1950, she married Raymond E. Whiting.
In 1968, she and Ray moved to LaGrange before moving to Columbia City in June of 1973. She had worked at the LaGrange and Whitley County Courthouses and the Whitley County License Branch. She had been a member of the Professional Business Women in LaGrange.
