PROGRAM PREVIEW: DYW to highlight nine participants

COLUMBIA CITY — Nine Whitley County high school seniors will participate in the county’s Distinguished Young Woman program.

Mindi Hoffman will join Greg Hockemeyer as emcee the program which is slated for Saturday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m.

WHITLEY COUNTY — Two Republicans have put their names on the list in hopes to fill the Whitley County Auditor’s position.

Whitley County Republican Precinct Committeemen will hold a caucus Wednesday at 7 p.m. to fill the position of County Auditor.

COLUMBIA CITY — As Columbia City’s Park Department’s baseball and softball programs continue to grow, officials are looking to add some structure to the programs’ committees.

While not much is expected to change from the parents’ and players’ standpoints, the league’s leaders may see new guidelines.

EAGLES FALL: ’Busco falls to Lewis Cass, 16-7

WALTON — In its first meeting with Lewis Cass, Churubusco’s football team fell to the Kings, 16-7 after a long weather delay.

Churubusco jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, and the Eagles’ defense continued to control the game in the opening minutes of the second quarter, when Churubusco held off Lewis Cass, on fourth down, one yard away from the goal, to force a turnover on downs.

COUNTY RIVALRY: Eagles swarm Wildcats; win 43-20

SOUTH WHITLEY — The Columbia City Eagle and the Whitko Wildcat football teams renewed the battle for the Eel River Trophy Friday night at the Wildcats’ Ryan Huff Field.

In a stark reversal of last week’s grind-it-out ground attack, the Eagles used a potent aerial attack to put the Wildcats in a 22-point first-quarter hole on their way to a 43-20 win.

CSNI: ‘We’re all about care’ of patients, families

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City Rotary Club members learned about Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana at the club’s Tuesday luncheon meeting in the community room at Parkview Whitley Hospital. Linda Bewley, outreach coordinator for the agency, began her presentation by asking how many in her audience had been touched by cancer or knew someone who had been afflicted. Every hand in the room was raised.
