Russell D. Erne, 75, of rural Pierceton, Kosciusko County, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 2, 2014 at his home.
He was born Feb. 12, 1939 in Columbia City, Ind., a son of Harlo J. and Dorothy Marie (Kiger) Erne. He attended West Ward School, graduated from Columbia City High School in 1957 and Indiana Wesleyan College in Marion.
His first employment was with Blue Bell. In 1961 he began working at Fort Benjamin Harrison as a clerk then enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was honorably discharged in 1965.

Frederick Sheets, 45

Frederick William Sheets, 45, of Fort Wayne passed away at 2:38 p.m. Monday, December 1, 2014 at Lutheran Hospital. Born on July 30, 1969 in Fort Wayne, he was the son of Richard C. Sheets and Patricia (Grant) Uhl.

Virginia Bogner, 83

Virginia M. Bogner, 83, passed away Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at Miller’s at Oak Pointe in Columbia City.
Born in Whitley County, Virginia worked for GTE for over 40 years before her retirement in 1991. Virginia was a master gardener, growing lots of food and donating much of it to the Fort Wayne Food Bank for many years. Aside from gardening, she also enjoyed making crafts, and photography.
Surviving are her nephews, Bill (Becky) Bogner of Larwill, Dave (Sherri) Bogner of Columbia City; niece, Shari Vanderford of Greenfield, along with many extended family members.

SAINTS DOWN: Lady Eagles now 7-0

FORT WAYNE ­— The Columbia City Lady Eagles basketball team blew open a close contest against a tall, physical Bishop Dwenger team on Tuesday night, going on a 16-4 run for the final six minutes of the game to take a 63-49 win on the Saints home court, bringing their record to 7-0.

ECKERT TO REPLACE ROHRER: Veterans affairs office to see changes

WHITLEY COUNTY — The announcement of his retirement in his monthly column in The Post & Mail by current Whitley County Veterans Affairs Officer Gene Rohrer means personnel changes in that county office.

Rohrer’s replacement, current Veterans Affairs Assistant Officer Dick Eckert, went before the Whitley County Commissioners Monday updating the commissioners on the transitions that the office will face and bringing forth personnel proposals for the office.

LIGHT ICING IN AREA: Some roadways may be slick

WHITLEY COUNTY — A light coating of sleet and ice covered some parts of Whitley County during the night, which may cause slick spots on some roadways. Use caution when traveling.

The Whitley County EMA had issued a Weather Advisory that was in effect Tuesday. Snow and freezing rain was predicted during the day, causing hazardous roadways. That failed to materialize, but light precipitation occurred during the early hours Wednesday.

WRESTLING POSTPONED: Columbia City at Churubusco postponed

Columbia City High School Athletic Director Geoff Penrod announced that Wednesday night’s wrestling match at Churubusco has been postponed until Tuesday Dec. 9. The match will take place in the Churubusco Elementary School gymnasium at 6:30 pm.

Sept. 16, 1927 — Dec. 1, 2014
Juanita B. McConnell, 87, of Little Cedar Lake, died peacefully after a four month journey with cancer at 9:05 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, 2014 at Renaissance Village where she had been a resident since Sept. 20.
She was born Sept. 16, 1927 in Columbia City, a daughter of John F. and Rosena A. (Hartman) Karst.
She graduated from Columbia City High School in 1945 and St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in 1952.

SENATE STAND-IN: Caucus set to determine Banks' replacement

HUNTINGTON — Shortly after swearing in last month, Indiana State Sen. Jim Banks turned in his leave of absence.
Banks is currently serving in Afghanistan with the U.S. Navy, and will be on leave until May.
While he is gone, the Republican Party is looking to fill his seat.
On Thursday, Dec. 4, the Indiana Republican Party is holding a caucus of the precinct committeemen of Senate District 17 to elect a temporary replacement for Banks.
The caucus will be held at the Quayle Vice Presidential Learning Center near downtown Huntington at 6:30 p.m..
The center is located at 815 Warren St.
