COMPASSION WALK: Balloons released in memory

August 12, 2014

More than 100 walkers came together for The Compassionate Friends’ annual Walk to Remember. Family members who had lost a loved one walked from the Whitley County Courthouse to DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home in Columbia City. After a brief ceremony, 150 balloons were released in memory of those passed away.

SOGGY START: Lady Eagles grab big win over Warsaw

WINONA LAKE — Columbia City’s girls golf team traveled to Stonehenge Golf Club, historically known to trip up the Lady Eagles, to beat Warsaw 202-206 on a soggy Monday afternoon. After a rain delay, the teams took the course to improve their season record to 2-1.

Diane P. Woods, 78, of Fort Wayne, passed away at 5:29 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, 2014, at her residence.
She was born April 12, 1936, in Fort Wayne, a daughter of the late Otis and Dorothy Reese.
Surviving are her four children, Rebecca (Mark) Frankart of Columbia City, Jeffrey Woods of Fort Wayne, Candice (Mike) Moster of Gainsville, TX., and Patricia (Russel) Shears of New Haven; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Judy (John) Overholt of Fort Wayne, and Vicki Wilkerson of Fort Wayne.

OPEN FOR DISCUSSION: Public meeting on sewer rate increase today

COLUMBIA CITY — The public has the opportunity to voice its opinion to the Columbia City Common Council tonight regarding the city’s upcoming sewer rate increase. Due to state and federal mandates and the implementation of the city’s Long Term Control Plan, an increase is inevitable. The question is: How will that increase be executed is open for discussion.

The meeting is tonight at 7 p.m. on the second floor of City Hall in the Council Chambers.

ON THE RISE: Gas prices increase in the area

FORT WAYNE (Aug. 12, 2014) -- Gas prices have fallen nationally, but that is not the case for Fort Wayne and the surrounding areas.

Average retail gasoline prices in have risen 11.1 cents per gallon in the past week.

Patrick DeHaan with GasBuddy.com says the hike is likely due to refinery issues and planned maintenance, but as the driving season concludes, prices are likely to drop- most significantly in late September through the holidays.

SCAM ALERT: Farmers State Bank debit card holders targeted

STEUBEN COUNTY (Aug. 12, 2014) -- The Steuben County Sheriff's Office is warning Hoosiers about a recent scam alert, targeting people who have a Farmers State Bank debit card.

According to officials with Farmers State Bank, customers have been reporting that they're receiving automated phone calls from people who claim to be with Farmers State Bank. The caller then proceeds to tell the customer that their debit card has been compromised.

This is a scam and not the bank calling. Farmers State Bank does not use automated messages to alert customers of debit card fraud.

WHITLEY COUNTY (Aug. 12, 2014) -- Temperatures will fall into the 70s today as another strong weather system moves through the area.

High temperatures will stay cool through the end of the week with warmer, more humid air returning by late in the weekend and early next week.

After today, shower and storm chances are pretty minimal as well as it will be a very dry pattern for the next several days.

Today: Mostly cloudy with scattered showers especially this afternoon.

Winds: W 10-15 mph with gusts up to 20 mph.

18-HOLES: B.A.B.E. to hold its 3rd annual mini-golf event

COLUMBIA CITY — The 3rd Annual B.A.B.E. Open is a miniature golf tournament to be held Thursday, Aug. 28 at Paige’s Crossing. Sign up is $120 per team of four or $30 per person. The fee includes 18-hole tournament play and lunch. Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
