Danny Joe Gray, 58, of South Whitley, passed away at 7:53 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2014 at his home.
Born Jan. 18, 1956 in Fort Wayne, he was the son of Muris Gray and Lillian A. Ness.
He graduated from Columbia City High School Class of 1975. On Oct. 21, 1989 he married Debra “Debbie” Languell. He had worked at Dana Weatherhead in Columbia City, OMC Aluminum Boat Group in Syracuse and at Ultra Electronics in Columbia City. Danny had been a member of the Elk’s Lodge, Eagles Lodge and Jaycees.

END-OF-SEASON AWARDS: Boys, girls cross country runners honored

Columbia City Cross Country coaches Bob Fahl and Ashely Cearbaugh hosted the end-of-season awards ceremony last week, celebrating a very successful season with the boys team improving from last year and the girls team running all the way to semi-state and placing one team away from a trip to the state finals.

SMITH-GREEN EVALUATION: Assessment shows room for improvement, but lacks accuracy

CHURUBUSCO — Indiana’s Department of Education (IDOE) released its statewide school grades last Wednesday. Intended to provide the public and administrators with a quick evaluation, the yearly assessment gives schools a grade based on the A-F scale, with an “A” being exemplary and “F” denoting probationary status.

TALENT AUDITION: USF to launch marching band program for fall 2015

FORT WAYNE — The University of Saint Francis will begin immediately to recruit students to form a USF Marching Band. The band will have one year to form and rehearse for their debut in the fall of 2016. The university’s goal is to build a band of 100 members including a color guard within four years.

USF officials hope the new band will be instrumental in enhancing the spectator experience at sporting events. Talent awards up to $3,000 will be available to students who are accepted to join the band. Students interested in all university programs are invited to try out.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Motorists be aware of blowing snow

FIRE CALL: CCFD responds to smoke inside newspaper business office

COLUMBIA CITY – Columbia City's Fire Department was summoned to The Post & Mail shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday when a heating unit servicing the business office area of the newspaper emitted a small amount of smoke.

CCFD was called as a precautionary measure. The fire department's infra-red imaging revealed a hot spot in the housing of one of the four heating units, which apparently caused the minor smoke problem.

There was no damage and the newspaper's business office will open as usual at 8 a.m. Thursday.

CALLING ALL HUNTERS: The Post & Mail seeks hunting photos

COLUMBIA CITY — The Post & Mail is seeking photo submissions from your hunting season. Both hunting and fishing photos can be emailed to sports@thepostandmail.com.

Photos must include the names of those pictured. Either the sportsman should be from Whitley County or the animal hunted within the area.

SHOEBOXES FOR CHILDREN: Thousands to pour into Col. City

COLUMBIA CITY — Local and area residents will soon be packing joy into shoeboxes for children in need overseas
With holiday supplies already covering the store shelves, individuals, families, churches and groups in and around Columbia City are working to make Christmas a reality for kids in need around the world by filling shoeboxes with toys, school supplies, hygiene items and notes of encouragement.

CHURUBUSCO — Defense can sometimes be contagious. When one player grabs a steal, swats a shot or takes a charge, the rest of the team can pick up on that and feed off of it. Then, when a whole team starts swarming, it can turn into a blowout in a hurry. The Garrett Lady Railroaders learned that lesson for the first time since 2001 against the Churubusco Lady Eagles Tuesday night.
