UNITED WAY: Busy hands unite for Day of Caring

WHITLEY COUNTY — Clad in bright yellow shirts, volunteers set out in teams to tackle a variety of community service projects as part of the United Way of Whitley County’s Day of Caring Tuesday.

Two-hundred eighty pairs of hands worked on landscaping, painting projects and cleaning efforts at more than 25 sites throughout the county.

WHITLEY COUNTY — Without an opponent, Christopher Judy was a shoe-in for the State Representative office.

A Republican Caucus was held Tuesday night to fill the vacancy created when State Rep. Kathy Heuer resigned her District 83 seat Aug. 21.

James Wilcox, 77

James M. Wilcox, 77 of Fort Wayne and formerly of Big Lake, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2014, in Columbia City.
Surviving are two daughters, Tammy Azar (Bryon) Yoder of Big Lake and Beverly Weber of Boston, Mass; a stepson, Bobby Chunn of Louisiana; a stepdaughter Deborah Wilkinson of Fort Wayne; three granddaughters, Elizabeth (Scotty) Kessler, Samantha Geschwind, and R. Renee Azar and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death his brother, William Wilcox and one great-grandson, Donovan Kessler.

John Greene, 42

John Paul Greene, 42, passed away Sept. 12, 2014, in Lima, Ohio.
He was born to Stanley Martin and Peggy (Watkins) Greene Nov. 1, 1971, in Fort Wayne.
He graduated from Huntington High School with the Class of 1990 and been a sign maker for Johnson Brothers in South Whitley and Signs Source USA in Lima.
John was well-known to be generous of spirit, a loving and compassionate family member, and hard-working.

Ray Ashbaugh, 96

Ray E. Ashbaugh, 96, a resident of rural Fort Wayne and long time Lake Township farmer, passed away at 7:55 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014, at the Kingston Care Center in Fort Wayne where he had been a patient for the past 11 months.
Mr. Ashbaugh was born May 19, 1918, in Van Wert, Ohio, a son of Alva and Marvel (Shaw) Ashbaugh, and spent his formative years there.
He was married in Van Wert in 1943 to Helen M. Craft and moved to Lafayette Township in Allen County in 1945 where he lived until moving to his present farm home in Lake Township in 1957.

RABBIT AMBASSADORS: 4-Hers participate in state contest

Members of the Whitley County 4-H Rabbit Club competed at the Indiana State Fair Sunday, Aug. 3, in a Rabbit Ambassador Competition. 4-Hers studied to be prepared for a written test, 20 rabbit breed identification test and showmanship competition. Marlee Heriter placed fifth in the Junior age division. Rozlyn Bishop placed in the honor group in the Intermediate age division. Crystal Van Houten placed in the honor group in the Senior age division and Rebecca Lilly placed in the honor group in the Master age division. From left: Heriter, Bishop, Van Houten and Lilly.
