VISION TO ESTABLISH NERVE CENTER: EDC to apply for Tech Park Status

WHITLEY COUNTY — In a bid to stimulate business growth and innovation within the area, the Whitley County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) is seeking approval from the state to be considered Certified Tech Park Status. The EDC’s vision is to establish a center for design and development as a nerve center where established businesses and prospective entrepreneurs can plan, build and equip aspiring ventures.

GOAL ACCOMPLISHED: Col. City volleyball wins Whitko Invite

SOUTH WHITLEY — Columbia City’s volleyball team came into Saturday’s Whitko Invitational with two very distinct goals. The first goal was to avenge a loss to the Garrett Lady Railroaders from earlier in the season. The second was to defend their two –time tournament championship. The Lady Eagles accomplished both of those goals, downing the Lady Railroaders in straight games on their way to a pool win and a come-from-behind third straight tournament title.

LADY EAGLES ADVANCE TO REGIONAL: McFarland places in top 10 to move on

FORT WAYNE — Columbia City’s girls cross country team, along with male counterpart Andrew McFarland, will be headed to Saturday’s regional meet at West Noble after advancing from the weekend’s sectional at Northrop.

FUN FOR ALL AT FALL FEST: CC Main Street hosts downtown event for all ages

COLUMBIA CITY — Fun was had by children, adults and families Saturday afternoon and evening for the annual Columbia City Fall Festival. Formerly held at Morsches Park, the event was moved downtown by the Columbia City Main Street Association, which coordinated the festivities.

Allan N. Swangren, 75

Allan N. Swangren, 75, passed away peacefully at 12:05 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014 at Miller’s Merry Manor, Columbia City, where he had been a resident since March.
He was born Dec. 1, 1938 in Melrose Park, Ill., son of the late Norman and Mabel (Kopp) Swangren. He spent his formative years in Maywood, Ill. and attended Proviso High School, Maywood, Ill.
On Jan. 24, 1962 he was inducted into the U.S. Army. On Jan. 27, 1964 he was honorably discharged and moved to reserve status. He completed his service Jan. 23, 1968.

Treva Ghaster, 90

Treva Eloise Ghaster, 90, passed away Sunday Oct. 5, 2014, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne.
Born in Whitley County, Treva was a Lutheran School of Nursing graduate and worked as an R.N. with Lutheran Hospital and St. Joe Medical Center for many years, retiring in 1991. She was a member of Blackhawk Baptist Church.

SCHOOL NUMBERS JUMP: WCCS boasts large kindergarten class

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County Consolidated Schools can expect a slightly higher budget this year, after enrollment numbers posted slightly higher than the last count in February. WCCS Superintendent Patricia O’Connor said large kindergarten class is partially to thank for the increase.
