All-Star game this weekend

Whitko Soccer Athletes will be completing in the 3rd Annual Indiana Elite North vs South All-Star Soccer Challenge Saturday. Indiana Elite will showcase all-stars from both Northern and Southern Indiana schools. The Junior Division starts at 9 a.m. and the Senior Division 12:30 p.m. at Danville Community High School’s Warrior Stadium, in Danville, Ind.

Eagles go 8-3 in first year under Sade

CHURUBUSCO — There was a large pair of shoes to fill coaching on the sidelines for Churubusco’s football team.

Paul Sade stepped in to replace Lee Etzler in 2013 after several years as an assistant. Etzler had led the Eagles for 11 years, including two regional championships and at least a share of the Northeast Corner Conference title over the past four years.

Pumpkin playtime

Kindergarten students at Little Turtle Elementary School participated in Pumpkin Day activities.

Students enjoyed learning pumpkin finger plays, poems and songs.

They also weighed, measured, and explored pumpkins they received from their study trip to Fashion Farm Pumpkin Fantasyland.

Mable Blanchard, 91

November 8, 2013

Mable I. Blanchard, 91, of Richmond, Texas, passed away at 6:13 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, at Cambridge Nursing Home in Richmond.
Born on March 28, 1922, in Columbia City, she was the daughter of Leland Edward Blew and May Ilean Blew.
On July 11, 1942, she married Melvin Hayes Blanchard at Hattiesburg, Ms. She was a custodian at Whitko Community School Corporation for 22 and a half years. She had lived in Columbia City until 2003, when she moved to be closer to her son in Richmond, Texas.

GOOD FOOD, GOOD SPIRITS: LWC hosts event to treat the palate

COLUMBIA CITY — A night to tempt the senses was all in an effort to raise funds and awareness for Leadership Whitley County (LWC).

The nonprofit organization held its annual Sip & Savor at Eagles Nest Event Center, Columbia City Thursday night.

Working to develop community leaders and engage local residents, LWC is responsible for producing ideas and concepts, such as the Splash Pad in Morsches Park.

“We want to give people the opportunity and the tools to better our county,” said LWC leader Kelley Sheiss.

ELECTION LOCATION REGULATIONS: Voting comes at an up-front cost

COLUMBIA CITY — Polling locations require more than a simple ballot box and voting booth.

To comply with state regulations, the county will invest in upgrading several locations throughout the county to be ready for primary elections in May of 2014.

Debbie Beers is Whitley County’s clerk of the courts and oversees the voting process. She approached County Council members Tuesday to ask for funds up front in the work needed to make locations meet state standards.

Whitley Co. Rapids win Spooktacular Invite

KENDALLVILLE — Whitley County Rapids took home first place among eight teams at the Spooktacular Invitational held at the Cole YMCA in Kendallville.

There were eight teams that competed in the swim meet.

Several Rapids team records were broken. Hadley Snell swam 18.75 in the 25 butterfly to break the girls 8-and-under record.

Mykaela Crowell set three new team records for girls 11-12. Those times and events included: a 32.49 in the 50 backstroke, a 35.50 in the 50 breaststroke and a 1:12.16 in the 100 individual medley.

VETERANS RACE: Favorable weather on tap for marathon

COLUMBIA CITY — Blue skies and mild temperatures are standing by for Saturday morning’s Veterans Marathon in Columbia City.

In the fifth-annual event, athletes can expect temperatures in the upper 50s with partly sunny skies.

Online registration for the race closed at 11 a.m. today.

Defending champion Justin Gillette, who has won every Veterans Marathon since its inception five years ago, is looking to grab his fifth win this year.

Sectional finals this week for most schools

NORTHEAST INDIANA — With two weeks of postseason football in the books, certain trends have emerged.

Some high school football conferences have several schools still in play for the ultimate goal.

Others have had many of their teams fall out of the race.

With two weeks gone, four Northeast Hoosier Conference (NHC) schools remain.
