Nadine Kerr, 76, of South Whitley, passed away at Millers Merry Manor in Columbia City Saturday, Jan. 19, at 1:30 a.m.
Born on Nov. 22, 1936, in Floyd County, Ky., she was the daughter of John and Melvina (Howe) Keithley.
She has been a Whitley County resident since 1981 moving from Kentucky where she attended school. She worked at R.R. Donnelley, Warsaw; Taco Bell, Columbia City and was a homemaker and housewife. She attended Free Will Baptist Church, Pierceton.

Eagles finish on right side of NHC dogfight

COLUMBIA CITY — After coming out on the wrong side of a thriller against Northeast Hoosier Conference foe Homestead last week, Columbia City’s boys basketball team won a close game against another conference opponent Saturday.

Eagle Drew Benedict hit the game-winning 3-pointer with 46 seconds left to give DeKalb its first conference loss, 47-46.

“They find a way to get it done,” Columbia City head coach Chris Benedict said. “Sometimes it’s not always pretty.”

Columbia City had an eight-point lead going into the fourth quarter, a lead that slowly dwindled in the final eight minutes.

Churubusco captures second in NECC

LIGONIER — Churubusco crowned two individual champions and took second place overall as a team at the Northeast Corner Conference (NCC) Wrestling Tournament Saturday.

The Eagles garnered 182.5 points as a team, placing them 14.5 behind champion Fremont.

The two champions for ‘Busco were Brian Richardson at 195 and Jason Nicodemus at 220. Richardson earned the crown with two pins and a 7-5 championship match decision over Zach Goodyear of West Noble, who had defeated Richardson at the conference meet last year.

Col. City’s top seeds fall to upsets at conference

WATERLOO — Columbia City’s wrestling team came into Saturday’s Northeast Hoosier Conference wrestling tournament with hopes of an upper-division finish and at least one individual champion. Unfortunately for the Eagles, things did not turn out that way, as several high Eagle seeds fell to upsets and Columbia City finished sixth as a team.

Whitko places sixth at TRC wrestling tournament

DENVER — Whitko’s wrestling team competed in the Three Rivers Conference Wrestling Tournament Saturday morning at North Miami Junior-Senior High School. The Wildcats finished sixth with 150.5 points.

Whitko’s Lane Wolf took the 120-pound weight class championship after entering the tournament unseeded.

“I thought our guys wrestled extremely well,” said Whitko head coach Frank Bumgardner. “They wrestled hard and showed improvement, that’s what we’ve been working on the last couple weeks.”

Whitko was comparatively short-handed, having wrestlers in 11 of the 14 weight classes.

Whitko girls knock off 17th ranked Northfield

WABASH — Whitko’s girls basketball team pulled off an upset on Saturday, defeating Class 2A 17th-ranked Northfield on the road.

The Lady Wildcats defeated the Lady Norsemen by a final score of 42-35. The win moves Whitko up to 6-12 for the season and 2-4 in the conference. Northfield falls to a record of 13-4 and 3-3 in the Three Rivers Conference.

Both teams kept the game close throughout. Northfield led by three at halftime, 16-13. Both teams scored eight points in the third quarter to keep the margin in favor of the Norsemen by three entering the final period.

DONNA ROSE: Whitko athletics loses a devotee

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko basketball lost a long-time, avid supporter Saturday.

The Wildcats’ gymnasium seemed oddly quiet to many Whitko fans without the presence of Donna Rose, who died in a single-vehicle crash, just hours before the boys basketball game against West Noble.

Rose, 73, was in the crowd the night before, Friday, as she has been for nearly every Whitko home game for decades.

According to the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department, Rose was killed after her vehicle struck a tree near County Roads 500 South and 800 West at approximately 2:44 p.m. Saturday.

'BUSCO BYE-BYE: SGCS bids farewell to Bailey

CHURUBUSCO — Smith-Green Community Schools started classes Monday morning with a new superintendent, Galen Mast. Before the transition, SGCS took the time to honor its departing district leader and long-time servant of public education, Ralph Bailey.

Bailey had been with SGCS since July 2012, serving as interim superintendent.

Administrators, Bailey’s family and other well-wishers were on hand for the reception. Among Bailey’s visitors were two Indiana State Representatives, Rep. David Ober and Rep. Kathy Heuer.

HOMEGROWN NUTRITION: Farmers market preps for 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — It’s the middle of winter, but vendors are already preparing for Whitley County’s Farmers Market that will open in the spring.

With fresh produce, baked good and crafts, the market is preparing for some possible new features to draw in larger crowds.

Chris Lilly, the market master, will be attending a conference in February centered on preparing markets to accept SNAP Benefits.

The government food assistance program would allow market shoppers to purchase foods from vendors using their SNAP Benefits.

HOMESTEAD VERIFICATION: Auditor still waits on more than 300

COLUMBIA CITY — Homestead verification work has been keeping the Whitley County Auditor’s Office busy.

The deadline to file for homestead tax credits has come and gone. Now, those homeowners who did not file a verification will have to answer to the auditor’s office or pay a higher tax bill.

Jenny McGuire, Whitley County auditor, said she has been working with individuals who filed past the Dec. 31 deadline.

“We were keeping them on up to Jan. 15,” she said.
